Chapter 538: [A Godless World] (6) - I can’t fly!

"’Are you done yet?’" Ember’s voice rose from below, every word sounding as though it had been forced through gritted teeth.Adrian couldn’t help but reply, "Take it easy, would you?"

His hand had only just reached the mirror!

From the viewers’ perspective, all they could see was Adrian sitting on Ember’s shoulders while Ember gripped the narrow window ledge with both hands, the veins on the backs of his hands bulging.

[...]

[The hardest thing for me to believe is that Ember was the one who suggested this in the first place.]

[Seriously, it’s impossible to imagine.]

[Now I get why Adrian isn’t afraid of Ember.]

[Or maybe Ember was never that scary to begin with.]

[I have a feeling that if these two stay together much longer, Adrian’s going to start bullying Ember!]

[Why wait? He’s already riding on Ember’s shoulders!]

"Alright, are you ready? I’m pulling it," Adrian signaled.

"Just do it—"

Before Ember could even finish speaking, a powerful yank suddenly threw his entire body backward. He hadn’t expected Adrian to be so decisive. With one hard pull, Adrian tore the mirror free.

At the same time, however, the force sent both of them tumbling backward.

The wind howled past them.

Clamping onto Ember’s neck with every ounce of strength he could muster, Adrian babbled frantically, "I need to hold onto something, I need to hold onto something! I can’t fly! I’m not Chrysopelea paradisi..."

Ember’s face turned pale as Adrian squeezed his neck. For a brief moment, he genuinely felt as though he were about to be crushed to death by a giant python.

"Let go of your legs!" Ember roared.

Almost instantly, Adrian released him without the slightest hesitation.

Ember’s pupils contracted.

This idiot really had no idea what fear was. Or... did he trust him that much?

How ridiculous.

Countless thoughts flashed through Ember’s mind in an instant.

He twisted around, grabbed Adrian by the back of the neck, and with a powerful swing, hurled him through the open window.

He swore he hadn’t been trying to get revenge.

Adrian put on a spectacular performance of kissing the floor before ending up sprawled flat on the ground.

He tossed the mirror aside and rubbed his neck with both hands.

"Ember, you know what? I swear my neck just got stretched by two centimeters! Seriously!"

By then, Ember had already climbed back in through the window. Beads of sweat dotted his body, and there was still a faint purplish tinge to his face. Hearing Adrian’s complaint, he was so exasperated that he actually laughed.

"Oh, really? My neck was about to snap."

His voice was so hoarse it was almost impossible to make out.

Adrian flashed a toothy grin. He quickly picked up the mirror, got to his feet, and waved a hand.

"Alright, let’s head back. Looks like we collected quite a bit. Definitely more than that group you don’t like. Hahaha."

As he spoke, he briskly headed for the door.

Ember watched Adrian’s carefree figure for a moment before saying nothing and quickly following behind him.

However, they had barely stepped outside when they heard the security guard cry out in surprise.

He happened to catch sight of Ember just as one of his legs was still inside the room.

"I knew there was someone in there!"

The hallway instantly echoed with his shouting.

"Don’t you know the police sealed this place off?! Coming here on purpose—are you trying to make sure the murderer notices you?! Or are you the murderers?! Because of you idiots, I’m about to lose this high-paying job!"

The more he spoke, the shriller and harsher his voice became.

His skin began to bubble violently, as though countless things trapped beneath it could no longer wait to burst free.

Every muscle in Ember’s body tensed, fully prepared for the worst.

Adrian, however, calmly walked forward. He pulled an ID card from his pocket and held it up in front of the security guard.

"Hello. Sorry for not introducing myself sooner. I’m the captain of Special Task Force Three, directly assigned to investigate the Room 601 case. There are still many unanswered questions, so I came back to conduct a discreet investigation. I didn’t expect it to cause such a big misunderstanding."

The security guard’s transformation froze in an instant.

His eyes widened as he stared at Adrian in disbelief.

His gaze remained fixed on the ID card, even after Adrian had slipped it back into his pocket. Before he could say anything, Adrian suddenly shouted,

"Ember, hurry up! At this rate, with how slow you are, you’ll never make it onto my team!"

Then he turned back to the security guard with a smile.

"Interns these days are all like this. They think they already know everything and never want to listen."

The security guard nodded with heartfelt agreement.

"Exactly! The moment they graduate from college, they start thinking they’re better than everyone else. Kids these days really need a few more hard knocks."

And just like that, Captain Adrian and Intern Ember made their way back to their floor.

Even though they had escaped the danger, Adrian couldn’t understand why Ember seemed to be in an even worse mood than before.

If the viewers had known what Adrian was thinking, they would probably have been screaming, How on earth can Adrian even tell what Ember is feeling?

Adrian asked directly, "What’s wrong? Did someone steal your money or something?"

Ember simply stared at Adrian’s pocket, his thoughts drifting.

So... Adrian was a police officer.

An NPC.

Not an artist like him.

Seeing Adrian’s face inch closer and closer, Ember took a step back before holding out his hand.

"Give me the mirror."

Adrian nodded.

"Alright, alright."

That was what he said.

In reality, he hugged the mirror, sat down on the nearby sofa, and immediately began studying it, paying absolutely no attention to Ember’s request.

Ember’s outstretched hand slowly curled into a fist. It trembled slightly before he finally walked over to Adrian and began examining the mirror himself.

It really was just a mirror.

Not some strange object.

But...

Adrian tapped the yellow talisman attached to the top of the mirror before smiling at Ember.

"What do you think would happen if we peeled this thing off?"

Ember frowned at Adrian.

"Give me the mirror."

He still couldn’t figure Adrian out.

But after everything that had happened, Ember had the distinct feeling that if Adrian wanted to, he would simply tear the talisman off without the slightest concern for what might happen afterward.

That was extremely dangerous.

Especially when Adrian was just an ordinary person.
