Chapter 539: [A Godless World] (7)
Adrian lightly brushed his fingers against the countless red threads crisscrossing the surface of the mirror. Even though he looked utterly devoid of strength, Ember couldn’t help but worry that he might rip all those red threads off at any moment.Frowning, Ember reached out and snatched the mirror straight from Adrian’s hands.
To his surprise, Adrian made no move to stop him. He merely looked up and blinked at him.
Holding the mirror tightly, Ember felt an unfamiliar sense of unease for the first time. In the end, he simply turned his head away and said in a low voice, "I’ll keep it. This mirror will stay in my room."
Night was when the bosses truly awakened. Tonight, he would find out exactly what this mirror would bring.
Adrian looked at Ember and couldn’t help but laugh. "I get it. You’re afraid I’ll get eaten, aren’t you? Thanks."
Ember merely frowned at Adrian. "I never said that."
Adrian didn’t seem to care. He simply slumped back in his chair, looking as though every last ounce of energy had left his body. "Is that so? Then let’s just say I’m imagining things."
Watching Adrian’s complete unwillingness to move another inch, Ember became even more convinced he was making the right decision. This thing belonged in his room. Someone as slow as Adrian would only end up getting eaten if he ran into a boss.
Remembering Adrian’s identity, he suddenly asked, "You’re a police officer, so why didn’t you stop ordinary people like us from coming to the crime scene?"
No one answered.
Ember looked back, only to find Adrian’s breathing had already settled into a steady rhythm. He had somehow put on a perfect demonstration of falling asleep within five seconds, truly the kind of skill everyone dreamed of having.
[I seriously suspect that’s Adrian’s ability.]
[Honestly, there’s nothing special about him. Is someone like this really supposed to win Ember over?]
[I think he’s still pretty capable. At the very least, he’s not afraid of dying.]
[I thought that was just Erebus priests’ default skill.]
[It feels like Ember wants to kick him.]
Whether Ember actually had that thought or not was impossible to tell. He merely shot Adrian a cold glance before taking the mirror back to his own room.
That evening, Adrian was awakened by the mouthwatering aroma of food.
He sat bolt upright, rubbed his face a couple of times, then hurried into the kitchen.
[I have this feeling that if his body could crawl on its own, he’d literally crawl across the floor.]
[This is exactly the kind of person who needs me to serve him tea and wait on him.]
[LOL, why does this livestream still have so many viewers?]
[No idea.]
"It smells amazing. What are you cooking, Ember?"
Ember looked at Adrian standing in the kitchen doorway, his hair hopelessly tousled from sleep and his watery eyes still half-lidded.
Adrian yawned widely, casually wiping away imaginary drool from the corner of his mouth. Even so, Ember couldn’t keep the look of disgust from creeping onto his face.
Clicking his tongue, he finally couldn’t hold it in anymore.
"Go wash your face."
"Sure."
Surprisingly, Adrian was fairly obedient.
As Ember scooped the noodles into bowls, he silently came to a conclusion.
Just like at lunch, the two of them barely exchanged a word. Since Ember didn’t object, Adrian simply assumed that the remaining noodles in the pot belonged to him.
On the first night, Ember decided to stay put for the time being. There was no need to rush.
As for Adrian, after finishing dinner, he went straight back to sleep, as though no amount of sleep would ever be enough for him.
Thick darkness quickly engulfed the entirety of Lotus Park. Although every unoccupied apartment had its lights switched on under the building manager’s orders, a heavy, oppressive gloom still blanketed everything.
Especially as more and more residents moved away, human voices became increasingly scarce, making the entire place feel eerily deserted.
Meanwhile, somewhere beyond anyone’s sight, something inside Room 601 began to change relentlessly.
Inside the apartment, although the windows were tightly shut, icy gusts of yin-laden wind swept through the rooms, tossing the furniture about as if venting boundless fury.
Five shadowy figures flickered indistinctly through the darkness, chasing one another like children playing tag.
At last, one of the shadows suddenly swelled to an enormous size and devoured everything else.
It was as though whatever had once sealed them away had finally disappeared. Now, they were free to grow without restraint, carrying with them resentment that could never be extinguished.
...
"Ahhhhhhh!"
Early the next morning, before dawn had fully broken, a piercing scream echoed through every apartment.
Someone was dead.
"As expected. A dungeon specialty. No matter how hard you try, you can’t avoid it."
Adrian muttered to himself. The important question was only how many people had died.
As Adrian stepped outside, Ember happened to be opening his door, ready to leave.
Seeing him, Adrian immediately called out, "Perfect timing. Wait for me, Ember."
[Ember’s been waiting for nearly ten minutes!]
[Trust me, during those ten minutes he was only thinking about the dungeon.]
[Could Adrian actually be right? Is Ember really not that scary?]
[Watching Ember stand there with that cold expression waiting for Adrian reminds me of a saying.]
[What saying?]
[...]
[Spit it out already, you bastard.]
The victim lived on the fourth floor.
His roommate said that the previous night, he had wanted to take a shower, but the water in their apartment had been cut off, so he went to the communal bathroom instead.
He returned not long afterward, and everything had seemed perfectly normal.
But when morning came, they found him lying stiff in the middle of the living room. His entire body was soaked, with water continuously dripping from him until the floor beneath him was completely drenched.
The story alone sounded incredibly sinister.
Many of the residents who had insisted on staying at Lotus Park were now genuinely terrified, shouting that they wanted to leave.
A crowd quickly surrounded the building manager, nearly swallowing him whole with their demands. Fortunately, the police arrived soon afterward and brought the situation under control. Only then did things appear to calm down, though it was merely superficial.
As soon as Ember and Adrian arrived, they found the scene packed with people.
It was Room 401.
How surprising.
The first apartment to be targeted wasn’t Room 501 after all.
It seemed these bosses had no particular pattern when it came to killing.
"This really makes me a little uncomfortable..."
Adrian murmured.
Just then, a sharp gaze suddenly swept toward him.
It was the security guard from the previous night.
The next moment, the man raised his voice and shouted, "Officers, perfect timing! Your captain is here too!"
Adrian: "..."
[HAHAHAHAHA! Your acting skills are terrible. Time to make a run for it!]
