Chapter 540: [A Godless World] (8)
Chapter 540: [A Godless World] (8)
Almost instantly, every eye in the hallway turned toward the end of the corridor by the emergency exit, where Adrian and Ember were standing.Ember didn’t react at first. It wasn’t until Adrian refused to step forward that he finally turned around a beat too late and looked at him.
"You’re... not a police officer?"
Adrian: "..."
He simply blinked at Ember, as though asking, You only figured that out now?
For the first time, Ember found himself completely caught off guard.
But before he could do anything, Adrian raised both hands in surrender, stepped forward obediently, and said, "I know impersonating a police officer is a crime. Officers, please arrest me."
[That’s so shameless.]
[What the hell just flashed across the comments?]
[Come here and let me arrest you. I’ve got plenty of torture devices at home.]
[Are they really torture devices, though?]
And just like that, Adrian was handcuffed and taken away.
Before leaving the scene, he happened to glance at the victim’s body, already covered with a white sheet.
It was one of the people from John’s group yesterday.
The spot where he had died corresponded exactly to the position marked by the police’s reconstruction of the scene—the very place where one of the three victims from Room 601 had died.
Ember opened his mouth, wanting to say something, though even his own mind had stopped functioning.
How was he supposed to save Adrian?
At this point, was he supposed to kill every police officer? That might very well trigger some unknown dungeon rule.
Perhaps... the only option would be to sneak into the police station later and rescue Adrian.
But reality proved that Ember had been thinking far too much.
Adrian simply raised a finger and pointed straight at him.
"That guy is my trainee too. Arrest him as well."
Ember: "..."
Looking down at the pair of handcuffs now fastened around his wrists, Ember fixed Adrian with an unwavering stare.
Countless emotions flickered through his eyes.
In the end, however, he said nothing and silently allowed himself to be escorted away.
John watched the two of them leave.
Eventually, his gaze settled on Adrian’s composed, unhurried figure, and his expression gradually darkened.
He had wanted to dismiss Ember’s companion as nothing more than an idiot.
But the effortless composure radiating from Adrian made him deeply uncomfortable.
It felt exactly like the pressure he had experienced when facing Rank B Artists...
Damn it.
"John, what should we do next...?"
One of his teammates finally spoke up.
John replied coldly, "For now, investigate that idiot’s death first."
Elle couldn’t help asking, "Did he really insist on going out just because he couldn’t take a shower?"
As strange as it sounded, the victim’s roommate had confirmed exactly that.
"And search Room 601 again..." John continued. "There has to be something we missed. There’s no way there aren’t any clues at all."
Meanwhile, Ember and Adrian were shoved into a police vehicle. At the same time, the victim’s body was wheeled away on a stretcher.
This was the first time Ember had ever left the dungeon’s central area.
It wasn’t that he hadn’t wanted to before. No matter how hard he tried, he simply couldn’t.
The areas surrounding a dungeon were usually shrouded in thick fog.
But this dungeon was completely different.
It was larger, more vivid, and every NPC seemed as though they were truly alive.
Ember turned toward Adrian.
"I thought you were a police officer."
Adrian looked at him speechlessly.
"I was only fooling that security guard. I never expected you to be the one who got fooled. You’re really gullible, Ember."
Ember: "..."
He decided not to speak anymore.
Adrian didn’t seem to mind. He said lightly, "Now we can freely dig through the police’s information. Ember, don’t be so slow."
"Don’t order me around," Ember replied, while secretly wondering just what Rank Artist Adrian really was.
Before long, the two of them were locked in holding cells.
Separate ones.
Looking at Ember’s face—which appeared cold and unapproachable but was actually astonishingly naïve—Adrian couldn’t help giving him one last reminder.
"If they ask you anything, just say you were working under me. Tell them you did whatever I told you to do, got it? The less you say, the better. If you let too much slip, even I won’t be able to save you."
The police officer: "..."
The officer couldn’t help coughing awkwardly before tugging Adrian away with considerably more force.
Adrian chuckled.
"Hey, don’t be so rough. You’re actually hurting me."
The male officer’s expression looked as though he’d just swallowed a hundred flies.
Meanwhile, the female officer beside him covered her mouth, doing her best to keep the corners of her lips from curling upward too obviously.
I’m on duty, she reminded herself.
Looking at Adrian’s carefree, flippant attitude, it came as no surprise that the officers failed to get much useful information out of him.
Or perhaps this simply wasn’t a role-playing dungeon. The police barely questioned Adrian about his own identity at all, making it even easier for him to avoid exposing himself.
Of course, regardless of whether they managed to clear their names, they would still be returning to Lotus Park tonight after going through all the case files at the police station.
Adrian looked completely unconcerned as his gaze settled on the female officer standing nearby.
At that very moment, she happened to look up, meeting his eyes.
Adrian narrowed his eyes into a smile.
In an instant, his irises turned a brilliant golden hue, and his pupils became unnaturally slit-like.
The female officer froze.
"Anna, what’s wrong?"
A colleague beside her suddenly asked.
Anna blinked and shook her head.
"It’s nothing."
Yet her gaze lingered on Adrian despite herself.
Adrian smiled at her and raised a hand in a casual farewell.
Just that tiny gesture, that single expression...
Anna suddenly felt her face burning hot.
She hurriedly lowered her head, thinking she must have lost her mind.
...
That night, darkness settled over the holding cells as well. Only a faint light filtered in from the corridor outside.
Grrr...
Adrian’s eyes flew open.
He rubbed his stomach and muttered with a hint of frustration,
"I’m so hungry."
[He suddenly seems a little pitiful.]
[I think we’d better not believe anything he shows us.]
Just then, voices came from outside.
"Anna? Didn’t your shift already end?"
"I suddenly remembered something I needed to do..."
Her footsteps drew closer and closer until they finally stopped outside Adrian’s holding cell.
"Are... are you hungry?"
she asked, looking at him with obvious embarrassment.
