Overlord: The Multiverse

Chapter 432: Going back

Chapter 432: Going back

The path winding down from the Azerlisia Mountains was quiet, save for the steady crunch of boots over gravel and snow. The sun was high, casting long shadows through the sparse pines that lined the trail. Blue Rose and my team moved in steady formation, our mission complete, our rewards secured. But despite the peaceful descent, there was tension. Not the dangerous kind—no, this one was far more personal.

Tia and Tina had been practically glued to my sides since the moment we left the dwarven capital. They weren’t exactly subtle, either. Every time we stopped for a break, one of them would sit close enough for our arms to brush. If I slowed my pace, so did they. If I sped up, they matched it perfectly.

"Comfortable?" I asked dryly after Tina leaned her head briefly against my shoulder during a brief pause.

"Very," she replied with a mischievous grin, her voice innocent but her eyes anything but.

Tia, on the other side, simply gave a content hum, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear as she stole a glance up at me. Her expression was calmer, but the warmth in her gaze matched her sister’s intent.

Up ahead, Gagaran walked with heavy, relaxed steps, humming a tavern tune. She glanced over her shoulder at the three of us and let out a short, sharp laugh.

"Well, damn," she said, elbowing Lakyus beside her. "Looks like someone’s been busy making memories in the mountains."

Lakyus blinked. "What do you mean?"

"Nothing," Gagaran replied, smirking. "Just saying someone’s got two shadows that weren’t there before."

Lakyus looked back and saw the way Tia and Tina walked a little too close to me. She tilted her head in thought.

"Maybe they’re just cold," she said innocently. "The mountains are chilly this time of year."

Gagaran chuckled. "Yeah. That’s gotta be it."

Clementine, walking slightly behind, scoffed under her breath. "Dense."

Solution did said much.

Evileye, keeping to the rear with her cloak drawn close, said nothing. But I noticed her gaze lingered on us. Her glowing eyes behind that ever-present mask followed the twins, then shifted to me. She didn’t speak, didn’t ask, but something in the way her pace changed—slightly slower, more measured—suggested she had realized what was going on.

She was thinking. Processing.

Knowing Evileye, it might take her a while to come to terms with it. She was many things: powerful, curious, intelligent... but emotionally straightforward? Not quite.

When we made camp for the night, the group settled into familiar roles. Gagaran and Clementine secured the perimeter while Lakyus, as usual, set up the magical wards. Tia and Tina, ever in sync, pretended to casually end up next to me again when it came time to sit near the fire.

"This spot taken?" Tina asked, already lowering herself beside me before I could respond.

"I suppose not," I said.

Tia took the other side, settling in without a word, her arm brushing against mine once again.

Gagaran, watching from across the flames, smirked wide and leaned back on her log like she was watching a play. "Can’t blame them," she muttered loud enough for the others to hear. "A guy who takes on armies and dragons and doesn’t break a sweat? What’s not to like?"

Clementine chuckled. "And here I thought I was the reckless one."

Lakyus finally seemed to catch the underlying meaning. She looked up from her book and frowned slightly, eyes flicking between Tia, Tina, and me.

"Oh," she said. Then, slowly, "Oh..."

Gagaran burst out laughing. "Welcome to the conversation."

Evileye remained quiet, seated alone on the opposite side of the fire. Her head was tilted down, and her fingers toyed with the edge of her cloak. It was hard to tell, but her silence spoke volumes. Every now and then, I’d catch her looking in our direction, then quickly looking away.

If she was blushing, the mask kept it hidden.

Tina leaned in. "They’re all catching on," she whispered, not the least bit concerned.

"Let them," Tia added.

They didn’t seem the type to hide what they wanted, and from their perspective, subtlety was optional. What surprised me was how naturally it all seemed to unfold. There was no grand declaration, no moment of confession. Just a quiet understanding—one that deepened with every shared glance and passing touch.

The night passed quietly after that. Conversation gave way to the crackling of the fire, the hush of wind in the trees, and the occasional animal cry in the distance. Eventually, the group retired to their tents.

I remained up for a while longer, staring into the flames, watching them dance and twist as my thoughts wandered.

Tia and Tina had each curled up in their own tent, glancing at me before retreating. Evileye lingered just a moment longer outside hers, as if she wanted to say something, but in the end, turned away and disappeared behind the flap.

I stood up and stretched, letting the cool air wash over me. The stars overhead glittered without interruption, the sky so wide and clear that for a moment, it felt like I was the only soul in the world.

But I wasn’t alone.

"Seems like I need to Tia and Tina about my origin and my tour plan." I chuckled.
