Chapter 148 Ambush by Harry, But He Says It's a Gift
Meanwhile, Harry and his companions returned to the Gryffindor common room. Before they could even say the password, the portrait shattered and the Fat Lady vanished without a trace.
Hermione exclaimed in horror, "Someone actually dared to attack the portrait?! Who could have done this?"
"I bet it's Slytherin." Ron spat. "More precisely, I suspect Malfoy."
Harry snorted coldly, "Elder sister and brothers, there's no need to panic. I'll find out with a simple question."
Immediately, he drew his sword and stabbed it into the ground, shouting, "Where are your house-elves? Show yourselves at once!"
As soon as he finished speaking, several "bang" sounds were heard, and a series of three or five house-elves popped out.
Upon seeing Harry, they were all overjoyed and wept tears of joy.
"Oh! Mr. Potter is alright!"
"Go tell Professor Dumbledore immediately!"
"Mr. Harry Potter, where have you been? I couldn't find you at Hogwarts..."
Harry was annoyed by the incessant chatter of the house-elves, so he grabbed one and asked:
"Tell me in detail, who destroyed this portrait of the fat lady? And what happened to the students inside?"
"Yes, Mr. Potter!"
The elf gave a salute and then parted ways with Harry.
Listen, dear reader: It turns out that an hour ago, Sirius Black sneaked into the schoolhouse, intending to break into the Gryffindor common room.
When the fat lady asked for the password, the man couldn't utter a single word. Enraged, he grabbed his knife and slashed the painting into countless pieces. The fat lady, terrified, fled to a nearby portrait to escape the disaster.
Upon hearing the news, Dumbledore immediately dispatched professors and a group of house-elves to search the entire school, and ordered all students from the four houses to pack up their bedding and sleep in the Great Hall that night.
Before the elf had even finished speaking, Harry was already seething with hatred, wishing he could crush the hilt of the knife in his hand.
"You little bastard! How dare you be so arrogant as to barge into my resting place! It's just bad luck that I had to go to Hogsmeade for a drink today, otherwise, I would have taught that scoundrel a lesson!"
The scarred man, his murderous aura surging, drew his knife and charged toward the auditorium.
With a single kick, he knocked the door over, startling hundreds of students sleeping on the floor in the Great Hall who turned to look. Upon seeing Harry, they whispered amongst themselves.
"Ha! Our famous Mr. Potter is back." Snape's face twitched, and he sneered, "While everyone else is worried about his safety, he's having a great time."
Harry glanced at him sideways and sneered, "What a scoundrel! What are you plotting! Are you perhaps in league with Sirius Black?"
"That scoundrel Black was after me! If I stayed at the school, I'd be dragging so many brothers and sisters into trouble! He can't even figure out such a simple scheme, no wonder he has to rely on that magic potion to act so rigidly!"
This barrage of insults truly enraged Snape, making him furious.
He gritted his teeth and said, "What? Can you predict the future? Did you know in advance that Blake was coming to see you tonight?"
"Don't make excuses for breaking curfew!"
Just then, Lupin led Ron and Hermione in and called out, "Good evening, Professor Dumbledore."
"I took Harry and the other two to run some errands tonight, but we left in a hurry and forgot to let you know in advance."
Having said that, he turned to Snape and asked, "Do you have any other questions, Professor Snape?"
Snape's face turned ashen, but he remained silent. Dumbledore nodded slightly and said, "I think everyone should be fine now."
"Severus, Remus, I would like you two to take the house-elves and inspect the area around the castle again."
The two professors, having received their orders, exchanged a glance and then departed.
"Alright, kids, now that everyone's here, I think it's time for bed."
As soon as Dumbledore finished speaking, he pointed his wand into the air, and hundreds of candles went out instantly, as if the Milky Way had been poured out. The Great Hall was plunged into complete darkness, as if the sun and moon had been extinguished and the stars had dimmed.
Ron and Hermione returned to their respective beds, while Harry, with a series of quick steps, deliberately chose to step through the gaps between the beds. He leaped and bounded across the beds of about a hundred people, heading straight for Dumbledore.
Knowing that Harry had a question, Dumbledore cast a magical barrier to block out sound from both inside and outside, and said, "Do you have any other questions, Harry?"
Harry cupped his hands in a respectful gesture and said in a deep voice, "I hope the professor can inform me whether Sirius Black has been captured."
"I'm sorry, Harry, the house-elves have searched the entire castle, but they haven't found any trace of Sirius Black."
When Harry heard that Black had fled, he was so angry that he gritted his teeth and his eyes blazed with fury, unable to contain himself in the slightest.
"Damn it! What nonsense does that bastard have about Hogwarts being an impregnable fortress? This dilapidated place looks more like rotten cotton wadding gnawed by worms and rats, riddled with holes!"
"It's one thing for Voldemort to come and go as he pleases, but to even let a filthy Death Eater like Black run rampant! It's truly a case of a temple without pillars, letting in a wicked wind!"
The scarred man roared repeatedly, his voice echoing within the enclosure, making Dumbledore's eardrums ache.
The old headmaster rubbed his ear and sighed, "Harry, I hope you don't go looking for him. Perhaps Voldemort has already laid an ambush."
"He will come back to you; you'll have many more opportunities to kill him."
Harry took these words to heart, clapped and cheered, exclaiming, "Professor, your words are so elegant, unlike your usual pedantic and pretentious talk!"
Dumbledore stroked his beard and smiled. "Go to sleep, Harry. You should get some rest now."
Neville has brought you a mattress and pillow; your seat is right next to the Gryffindor table.
He removed the barrier, and Harry bowed and took his leave. He then went back to the Gryffindor table and lay down in his own bed.
Although snoring gradually rose from all around, the scarred man tossed and turned, and every time he closed his eyes, his mind was filled with thoughts of his parents and Uncle Peter.
Just as he was feeling agitated, he suddenly heard a stealthy approaching sound beside him. Harry immediately held his breath and gripped the knife tightly.
Before the blade could strike, the figure spread a blanket in front of him, lay down, and whispered:
"Hey, Your Majesty, are you asleep?"
Upon hearing this voice, Harry relaxed and replied, "I thought it was Sirius Black making a comeback, but it turns out to be Brother George."
As soon as he finished speaking, he heard another voice from behind him.
"Oh, boss, please, I'm George."
"Fred, stop joking around. This is not the time for jokes."
These two mischievous devils, one in front and one behind, one on the left and one on the right, sandwiched Harry in the middle.
Harry, noticing the two men's strange behavior, asked suspiciously, "What urgent matter could you two brothers be looking for me about tonight?"
"Oh, it's just a small thing, not particularly important."
"You can't say that, Fred. I think this is still very important to Harry."
The two were engrossed in speaking in riddles, filling Harry's ears with their witty banter. He suddenly spread his arms wide, piercing their necks, and then snapped them together, like a soul-binding rope before the gates of hell.
"My two brothers, stop playing games. If it's something of utmost importance, just tell me."
"Ahem! Ahem! Well, Hogg, King of Hogwarts, we want to give you a wonderful treasure."
"No, that's right, you'll absolutely love it."
It is:
Harry lay on his bed on the floor, flanked by two mischievous devils.
His witty remarks and sharp tongue were actually a way of showing respect by offering a precious gift.
What treasures were offered, after all? We'll find out in the next chapter.
