Chapter 50 Speaking Japanese
Chapter 50 Speaking Japanese
The ship docked at the pier, and the people on board began to disembark.
Many Japanese people dressed in kimonos swaggered off the ship with pride on their faces, as if this were their homeland.
When Su Yuncheng was studying in Japan, he knew that the Japanese looked down on the Chinese. The Japanese admired the strong and envied those powerful countries, but they also had great ambitions and wanted to replace them.
As for China, they see it as nothing more than a piece of fat meat.
They hated the Westerners for preventing them from getting their hands on this lucrative prize, and they believed that Chinese land would belong to them sooner or later.
Su Yuncheng had long understood that the Japanese harbored wolfish ambitions and had coveted China for a long time. He was not surprised by the upcoming war, but he underestimated the cruelty of the war and the damage it would cause to China.
Fortunately, China emerged victorious in the end.
"Yun Cheng, Cang Jie."
Muto Tomoo disembarked from the ship. He was wearing a suit, while Horiuchi Eiko, dressed in an ordinary dress, was holding his arm.
Behind them were two servants who carried their luggage as they disembarked.
"Senior brother."
"Brother-in-law."
Su Yuncheng and Horiuchi Sōsuke stepped forward together. Eiko was smiling as she looked Sōsuke up and down, but Sōsuke kept his head down, like a mouse seeing a cat.
Horiuchi Sosuke wasn't afraid of his parents, but he was afraid of his older sister, who was much older than him.
He was raised by his older sister from a young age; otherwise, he wouldn't have been so close to Muto Tomoo.
"Senior brother, please get in the car."
Su Yuncheng rented a car. Muto Tomohiro didn't have anyone from the consulate pick him up. Su Yuncheng hadn't bought a car yet, so he had to rent one.
Su Yuncheng didn't hire a driver; he drove himself. Cangjie sat in the passenger seat, while Muto Tomohiro and his wife sat in the back.
As for the two servants, they were to take a rickshaw to the hotel.
Su Yuncheng booked the Huizhong Hotel for them. It was a large hotel run by foreigners and the first hotel in Shanghai to install an elevator.
Muto Tomohiro is not short of money, so Su Yuncheng has no need to help him save money.
"Senior brother, please rest for a while. We'll treat you to a welcome dinner tonight."
After escorting them to the luxury suite, Su Yuncheng took his leave, with Horiuchi Sōsuke following closely behind.
"Sousuke, you stay."
Horiuchi Eiko suddenly called out, and Horiuchi Sousuke stiffened, forced a smile, and slowly turned around: "Sister, you should rest well, I'll come back later."
"Stay here, I have something to tell you."
Eiko glared at him, and Horiuchi Sosuke reluctantly stayed in the room.
Su Yuncheng smiled. He knew why Horiuchi Eiko had kept Sōsuke behind. Eiko cared most about her younger brother's studies and was definitely asking about his progress.
That's how it was when we were in Japan.
Now that Horiuchi Sousuke has come to Shanghai to study, and with the emperor far away, Yingzi can't control him. So when they finally have a chance to meet, the first thing she asks is about his studies.
This kid is always thinking about making money; no wonder he can't study well.
Su Yuncheng had no sympathy for Horiuchi Sōsuke; the kid was a troublemaker, and Su Yuncheng had cleaned up his messes countless times.
With Yingzi around, at least he can be kept in check.
That evening, in a luxurious private room at the Huizhong Hotel, Su Yuncheng poured red wine.
Thankfully, I didn't go to Dingxianglou today.
During the meal, Muto Tomohiro didn't say much. After the meal, he immediately called Su Yuncheng to his study and asked him:
"What's the situation with Dylan right now?"
Su Yuncheng replied, "Dillon has already expressed his desire to go to the police force to the chairman, and the chairman did not object. The French consul has also sounded out the situation, so there shouldn't be any major problems. Next, we just need to send the money, and once Martin arrives in France and officially steps down, we can issue the appointment."
"Very good, you did well. What's Dylan's attitude?"
Muto Tomohiro asked the question he was most concerned about, and Su Yuncheng smiled and said, "He's still the same as always, wholeheartedly devoted to education. After he takes office, the public security will be better."
That's just how Dillon is; Su Yuncheng has no reason to lie.
"Being safer isn't a bad thing." Muto Tomohiro nodded slightly. Dylan's lack of concern for other aspects was actually more beneficial to them.
At least they have a very good relationship with Dylan, and it was through their efforts that Dylan became the Commissioner of Police.
That favor will definitely last.
"Senior, Martin will arrive in France in twenty days. We need to take action."
Su Yuncheng's meaning was simple: it was time to come up with the money, and they wanted to get things done as soon as possible and finalize the deal.
After the French Concession Municipal Council announced Martin's resignation, Durand was transferred to the police force.
"Okay, I brought the money with me this time. Tomorrow, you arrange to meet with Dillon, and I'll go and get it done right away."
Tomoo Muto is a decisive person; once he makes a decision, he won't change it.
"Senior, how did your trip back to China go?"
Su Yuncheng knew that Muto Tomohiro had always wanted to become the Consul General in Shanghai, but it wasn't possible yet.
During this trip back to China, he hopes to become a consul in another major city, such as Guangzhou or Chengdu.
"There's some hope in Chengdu, but we'll have to wait. If all goes well, I should be able to go there in a few months."
If he becomes a consul in another city first, then Tomoo Muto will have the opportunity to return to Shanghai and become the consul general in the future.
"That's good. How are you feeling, teacher?"
Su Yuncheng nodded slightly. The teacher he was referring to was Takahashi, the teacher he and Muto Tomohiro shared.
"The teacher is in good health; he mentioned you a while ago."
Muto Tomoo smiled and replied that Takahashi himself did not have much real power, but he had many students, among whom were some very capable individuals.
Most people wouldn't dare do anything to him.
"As long as he's in good health, that's all that matters. It's a pity I can't go back to visit him now."
"It's okay, there will be plenty of opportunities in the future."
The conversation between the two was not long. Su Yuncheng took his leave, and Horiuchi Sōsuke followed him back.
When he returned, Horiuchi Sosuke looked relieved.
Today, his sister asked him a lot of academic questions. Fortunately, his sister didn't know much about their school's curriculum, so he managed to brush her off.
However, he racked his brains a lot to answer his sister's question, which was much more tiring than his usual studies.
The next morning, Su Yuncheng called the Public Works Bureau and asked Dillon and Dubois to go to the Lowell Hotel.
The French love romance, and Tomoo Muto wanted to meet them at a formal occasion, so the Loewe Hotel was perfect.
"Mr. Durand, Mr. Dubois, welcome."
At noon, Su Yuncheng picked up Muto Tomohiro in advance and waited for Dylan and Dubois.
"Mr. Muto, it's been a long time."
Dubois was much more enthusiastic, while Durand greeted him politely.
Su Yuncheng noticed that the waiter, Xiao Wei, was secretly watching them.
Just who is this Xiao Wei?
Upon entering the private room, Su Yuncheng quickly started a conversation, and the group chatted quite well. Meanwhile, Xiao Wei, who had brought coffee and food, had been eavesdropping outside.
Even when he's outside, just by keeping an eye on Su Yuncheng, Su Yuncheng can sense his emotions.
First of all, he can understand French. Tomoo Muto is a diplomat, and he also knows some French, though not very well, but communication is not a problem.
They were communicating in French the whole time, not in Chinese or Japanese.
Su Yuncheng's heart skipped a beat, and he suddenly said a sentence in Japanese.
