Chapter 106 Mission Unexpected Changes
Chapter 106 Mission Unexpected Changes
Back at the Dark Brotherhood's stronghold tavern in Twin Harbor, Kane received his payment as promised.
After nodding her thanks to him, Sofia turned around with a serious expression and began to talk quietly with the others.
Kane understood. Although Twin Harbor was just a foothold for the Brotherhood, the fact that it could accept commissions here meant that it must have the support of headquarters, and other related relationships must be very complex.
However, none of this concerns him.
Kane hesitated for a moment, then got up and left.
During the journey, his form changed, and he returned to the human "Kane" and went back to the hotel where he had stayed.
Everything in the room was as before. He bent down to check the luggage under the bed. The gold coins were safe and sound. Then he fell into a deep sleep.
The next morning, the noise downstairs woke him up.
Kane was wide awake and got up to go downstairs, where he saw the hotel owner preparing breakfast.
"Were you woken up?"
The boss's voice trembled slightly. "A warehouse in the port area caught fire, and many people saw the thick smoke... Fortunately, no one was injured. However, the warehouse owner is going to be exiled for negligence, which is really terrible."
Kane's lips twitched slightly.
In places like Shantar, only the first five districts are relatively peaceful; chaos in the sixth and seventh districts is commonplace, and fires are generally not a big deal.
Twin Ports is just an ordinary port city in Sussas, and the fact that a fire could cause such panic among its inhabitants shows how peaceful the place is on ordinary days.
It's no wonder that Sussas has far more high-level spellcasters than Nords, yet it has never waged war against Nords.
Such a peaceful and tranquil society simply cannot withstand the turmoil of war.
He ate his porridge while listening to his boss continue gossiping.
The boss lowered his voice.
"I heard it was a warehouse belonging to a businessman named Donovan. Now the warehouse is burned down, and all the goods inside are probably gone. The losses must be considerable."
"The nobles behind him probably won't let him off so easily."
Kane immediately understood that this was retaliation from the Dark Brotherhood.
Destroying goods without harming people is quite in line with the local style.
He shook his head inwardly. Although there were many conspiracies and schemes here, there was always a certain "joking" restraint. The Susas Elven Court was indeed a country suitable for living in peace.
After breakfast, Kane said goodbye to his boss and went out for a stroll in the city.
Twin Ports is an important port city of the Susas Elven Court, which reminded him of Venice in his previous life.
The architecture is exquisite and beautiful, with wharves densely packed along the waterfront and boats coming and going on the water. To get to the other side, you usually have to take a small boat, and the fare is only one to five copper coins.
Kane spent twenty copper coins to hire a small boat and had the boatman take him around the city by water, so he could observe the layout of the entire city.
The warehouse area, the trade and artisan area, the residential area, the noble area... each area is divided into small islands by waterways, with distinct boundaries.
The experienced half-elf boatman, who was rowing the boat, would occasionally point out the scenery along the way to him.
Kane's gaze was suddenly drawn to a chapel in front of him where small boats were gathered. The building was still beautiful, and small boats would occasionally come ashore.
"That used to be a church dedicated to the chief god of the elves, although I don't know what that god's name was..."
The boatman spoke up at the opportune moment, "But now it's become a tourist attraction. If you wish to go, I'll dock right now."
"No need," Kane shook his head in refusal.
After the gods retreated, they were theoretically isolated from the material plane, but no one knows how many tricks they left behind.
Just like his own ritual to transform into a drow, it was clearly one of the backup plans Rose left for the drow.
The Elven pantheon and Lolth are sworn enemies, and their rash entry into such a place could easily lead to unforeseen events.
He looked at the boatman and fell silent for a moment.
A thousand years is too long, so long that even ordinary half-elves have forgotten the name of the chief god of the elven pantheon—Krelon Laresian.
That was a truly powerful god.
Just then, Kane caught sight of a group of soldiers escorting a noblewoman as they sailed in.
The other person has long, pointed ears, a characteristic of pure-blooded elves.
What bothered him even more was that he recognized several of the soldiers' faces outside the warehouse the previous night.
The noblewoman's gaze happened to sweep over him, and the boatman immediately bowed his head and bowed respectfully.
Kane's mind stirred slightly, and he shifted his gaze at the opportune moment; the other party quickly looked away as well.
After the group had gone far away, Kane asked the boatman, "Who is she?"
The boatman, still bowing his head, respectfully replied, "That's Mrs. Ella Finafenne of the Finafenne family. Speaking of which, it seems one of her family's warehouses burned down this morning, and I heard the losses were considerable..."
Kane nodded silently, offering no further comment. He now appeared as a human, dressed in local clothing, a stark contrast to his drow appearance from the previous night.
"Does she want to see me?" he wondered to himself.
……
As night fell, Kane once again donned his drow form and, carrying his belongings, arrived at the Dark Brotherhood's stronghold tavern.
Upon seeing him, Sofia immediately stepped forward and bowed:
"Lord Kane, this is your reward for yesterday's fight. The other party added thirty gold coins."
Kane looked at the bulging money bag on the table and asked, "Could you please store these gold coins for me?"
"Of course," Sophia said after a moment's thought, adding, "but we'll charge a 5% handling fee for a year's storage."
Kane's lips twitched slightly—this meant that saving a thousand gold coins for a year would still result in an additional fifty.
But he also knew that the Dark Brotherhood's "deposit" was just safekeeping and they wouldn't use the money to generate interest.
After a moment's hesitation, he nodded and said, "Store it." He then handed over his luggage, "Store all of these for me as well."
Sofia took the heavy luggage, a hint of surprise flashing in her eyes, her attitude becoming even more respectful: "Understood, I'll register right away."
She quickly retrieved a token: "This is the deposit slip."
At this moment, she was even more convinced that Kane must be a nobleman sent by a drow family to travel in Sussas.
Kane was not surprised.
Although the Dark Brotherhood is powerful overall, Sophia is ultimately just the head of a stronghold.
Moreover, yesterday's events have demonstrated that the Brotherhood's influence in the Elven Court of Sussas is limited; even the port merchants can disregard them by relying on their noble backgrounds.
He was about to ask if there were any new requests when Sophia spoke first: "Also, about that matter you asked us to handle before..."
"The matter I asked you to handle?"
Kane paused, then remembered—it must have been his scimitar master, Velanther, who had asked him to deliver the letter, addressed to Ms. Theresa.
Sofia looked at him, her tone apologetic:
"I'm sorry, Lord Kane, the lady Theresa you're looking for... has passed away."
Kane's face suddenly darkened; he disliked owing favors to others the most.
Velanther's instruction in the scimitar technique had helped him solve many problems, yet now he couldn't fulfill his promise to him.
After a moment's thought, he said, "Take me to where she is buried."
