Chapter 8 The Savages' Attack
Chapter 8 The Savages' Attack
Lynn thought this was the best approach; he needed a core group of people, but he didn't want to be too deeply involved.
This idea is a bit crude, but its advantage lies in its flexibility.
So, in front of everyone, Lynn handed the multi-purpose dagger to Kasa and told him that all he had to do was hollow out the handle and find suitable wood to make it into a sturdy and sharp spear, which would perfectly match his nickname.
Lynn didn't know what kind of steel the dagger was made of, but it was certainly far superior to any metal known in the world.
Of course, those with magic don't count.
As a result, Casarte immediately earned the new title of "Star Spear".
Nothing happened that night.
The next day, when they set off, Casa informed Lynn that three people had gone missing during the night.
Disappearance means death; everyone accepts that as the same thing.
The Thane provided Lynn with a sheep-drawn sled for transportation, but even after being domesticated, these sheep with their scimitar-shaped horns were difficult to control. Lynn had a sudden inspiration and thought that he might be able to possess the sheep using the abilities of the Easy Walker.
The result was indeed feasible.
He found that he had excellent control over different animals because this power came from the Three-Eyed Raven, who had extensive experience in controlling animals.
Lynn inherited this trait, but unlike the Three-Eyed Raven, he couldn't control a large number of animals at the same time, because the Three-Eyed Raven was a collection of countless Green Prophets, so he could have his will dispersed.
An ordinary Easy Walker would only fall into a mental breakdown if he did this, but I heard that Mans has a "six-form" named Valamir by his side who can control three wolves, a shadow lynx, and a strong snow bear. He must have some special talent.
As Lynn maneuvered the sled through the camp, he overheard people talking about him over the sheep's ears.
Some call him "White King," others "Son of the Stars," and still others "White Ghost Slayer," "Dragon Tamer," "Dragonborn," and now he's also known as "Sheep Spirit."
Lynn ignored this and just silently pulled the sled.
He occasionally looked back and saw himself sitting face down on the sled, with a fur pelt on his knees and a baby dragon curled up inside.
The world is truly amazing; I'm pulling myself along.
The group was moving much slower than Lynn had imagined, and the distance they needed to travel was also much farther than he had anticipated.
Lynn couldn't help but feel grateful for his initial choice; if he had been left to act alone, it would have been almost impossible for him to survive and leave this icy wasteland.
Along the way, sporadic free people joined, and the group began to grow increasingly bloated, eventually developing into a mixed force of over a thousand people.
Chaos and fighting were inevitable, but the Thane people didn't bother with them as long as they didn't get in the way, neither raiding nor offering any help.
On the other hand, the diverse group also allowed Lynn to witness the diversity of life.
Among those who joined later, the largest group were the Hard-footed people. They were short and stooped, and regardless of age or gender, they all looked like little old men. They were used to walking barefoot on the ice and snow with their heads down. Their feet were as hard as leather boiled in boiling water. They wore fur and usually wielded spears with stone tips, or sometimes they were simply pointed wooden spears that had been tempered.
They also lived in the far north of Frostfang, and were constantly at war with another clan, the Nightwalkers. Mance Red went to great lengths to facilitate negotiations between the two sides and maintain peace.
However, due to the small number of Night Walkers and their early departure, Lynn did not see them this time.
In addition, there are cave dwellers who dye their faces blue, purple, and green, and have teeth as sharp as files, as well as the glacial tribes who are said to live by eating human flesh. However, apart from their clothing, they do not look much different from the Thane people.
Unfortunately, we didn't get to see the giants and mammoths.
Nemo followed Lynn around every day as his guard, and when Lynn wasn't possessing a sheep, he would introduce him to the different clans.
He looked more like a tour guide than a guard.
Nemo once secretly told Lynn that his mother was a member of the Glacier Tribe who had been abducted by the Thern people, and that she gave birth to him after marrying her second husband.
His mother once said that the Glacier Tribe did have a tradition of cannibalism, but they only ate the corpses of those who died accidentally or from old age, rather than actively hunting living people.
There was no other way; the conditions there were just too harsh.
By the sixth day, the various disputes had escalated. Theft was a minor matter; robbery and murder were the main issues. Lynn, from the civilized world, could no longer stand by and watch.
He consulted with Kasa and suggested that the warriors of the Thane take over the security work, with the first priority being to strictly prohibit private fights and robberies, minimize deaths, and prevent undiscovered corpses from being used by the White Walkers.
Freemen cremate the dead to prevent them from being resurrected by the White Walkers (a practice the Glacier Tribe strongly objects to), but some evils lurk in the shadows. You can't expect someone who has committed murder to cremate the body voluntarily; that would become a guiding light revealing the crime.
Lynn's orders were carried out well, and the fierce Thane warriors quickly suppressed any dissenting voices.
Compared to other clans, the Thrones have a high proportion of warriors because they have long practiced a brutal purge system, leaving only strong men and fertile women.
Once men are no longer able to fight or mine and smelt, they are driven out to fend for themselves, and the same applies to women, except the standard changes to whether they still have labor and reproductive value.
This was how they maintained the clan's survival, and Lynn couldn't criticize them for it.
As far as he knew, even in the relatively warmer areas south of the Great Wall, many elderly people had to drag their frail bodies out to hunt during the harsh winter, only to venture into the icy wilderness.
Some of their bodies can still be found in the spring, but most have vanished forever.
The environment outside the Great Wall will only be worse.
The caravan continued to advance, but people were still dying every day, leaving Lynn feeling utterly powerless.
Food scarcity is just as deadly as the White Walkers, and he has no right to order the Thane to share food with other free people, although Kassa would most likely not refuse.
He could only do his best to maintain order and minimize the damage.
Many freemen heard of Lynn's name, and as a result, many disputes between families or clans were brought before him.
The order prohibiting private fights was issued by Lynn, so it makes perfect sense for people to come to Lynn for adjudication when they have unresolved conflicts.
So Lynn had to find time to sit in court and adjudicate cases during his daily commute, which left him somewhat amused and exasperated.
Over time, he discovered that although most of the free people were stubborn, as long as the right method was found, he could make them understand the principles through simple logic.
In fact, their disputes are usually not complicated. They are nothing more than conflicts of interest such as the ownership of prey and the location of camps. As long as they can remain impartial, they can always find a solution that satisfies both parties or even multiple parties.
If things simply didn't make sense, such as the Glacier Clan insisting on using their dead members as emergency food, Lynn had no choice but to have Nemo lead his men to settle things with fists.
In fact, the Glacier Clan's actions did not cause the dead to rise from the dead, because they would cut off the edible parts and make them into jerky. Lynn's intervention was more out of simple personal emotion; he simply could not accept cannibalism.
In order to get the Glacier Clan to give up cannibalism, Lynn had to ask the Kasa for help, and the Thern people eventually gave them six sheep as compensation.
So a few days later, Lynn got another nickname: "Just Lynn".
On the twelfth day, the Thane people's food reserves were exhausted, and they had to begin slaughtering the sheep and dwarf donkeys that pulled their sleds. However, they kept the one that pulled Lynn's sled and ensured that he and the dragon had enough to eat, fortunately the dragon was still young and didn't eat much.
The hunting attempts also failed; the surrounding wild animals had long been hunted to death by the previous migrating caravans, and the hunters, fearing the White Walkers, dared not stray too far from the camp.
Scattered savages continued to join along the way, but the total number never increased. Every morning when they set off, a huge bonfire would be lit at the end of the procession.
