Ice and Fire: Conquering the World Starting from the Wall

Chapter 29 The Night's Watch Oath

Chapter 29 The Night's Watch Oath

In fact, Lynn had no interest in the Rangers; what interested him was Jon Snow, who claimed to be the bastard son of the Duke of the North.

Since his transmigration, almost everything Lynn possessed had come from the gifts of the Duke of Bloodraven, which gave him a special expectation for this young man who was also a bastard from a noble family and had also become a member of the Night's Watch.

Although he is not on par with Brynden Rivers in terms of status, he may play a key role in the future conquest of the North.

Lynn had no prejudice against illegitimate children, because they had no say in their own birth, and the savages had no concept of the existence of illegitimate children.

What if?

So he told Mans about the idea.

"I don't think there's much hope."

Mans said:

"I met the boy once when I was still a member of the Night's Watch. He was like his father, upright and rigid, believing that they were the only ones in the world who had honor."

Mans commented:

"Southerners only recognize bloodlines. As long as one is a legitimate heir born in wedlock, even a pig can sit in a high position and receive the kneeling worship of his subjects."

"But if you reverse this and allow so-called illegitimate children to usurp the legitimacy, then all the nobles will rise up against you, because you have shaken the foundation of their bloodline and rule."

Indeed, Bloodraven spent his entire life opposing his noble bastard brothers, Damon Blackfyre and "Cold Iron" Aegon River.

However, after Aegon IV legitimized his bastard son before his death, a number of lords still supported Blackfyre. If Bloodraven hadn't repeatedly shot and killed Daemon and his son, the outcome of that rebellion would have been very different.

What if another king legitimized Winterfell's bastard son? Anyway, there are already five kings on this continent, so it doesn't seem to matter if one more comes along.

Seeing that Lynn was still pondering, Mans added fuel to the fire.

"In addition, the boy joined the Night's Watch and swore an oath: 'I will not marry, I will not hold land, I will not have children, I will not wear a crown, and I will not seek glory.'"

Lynn looked at Mans with suspicion.

Mance shrugged and said:

"I did not do it willingly, but was misled in my ignorance. If I were a few years older and had seen more of the world, I would never have made that vow."

Lynn was curious about the Night's Watch oath, as the Blood Raven Duke had no recollection of it, indicating that he didn't care about it.

So he asked Mans to recite it to him.

Mans was initially somewhat resistant, but later seemed to be caught up in some kind of memory.

Then, he suddenly read aloud in a very restrained voice:

"The long night is coming, and I shall begin my watch now, and not rest until I die."

I will not marry, nor will I be granted land, nor will I have children.

I will not wear a crown, nor will I vie for glory or favor.

I will serve my duty faithfully, even unto death.

I am the sword in the darkness, the guardian of the Great Wall.

The flames that ward off the cold, the light of dawn.

The horn to awaken the slumbering, the sturdy shield to protect the kingdom~

I pledge my life and honor to the Night's Watch, for this night and for all the nights to come.

This is undoubtedly a vow of extreme dedication, a lifelong contract that is almost like that of a monk, completely stripped of worldly identity.

Mans was a skilled singer, and he could have used his voice to recite this vow in a more austere and tragic way.

But he didn't. He simply recited it slowly in a completely emotionless voice, as if that would allow him to detach the vow from his life.

Lynn could sense that Mans couldn't do it, and Mans knew he knew it too.

So he asked them to leave.

"Lynn, the 'Star Child,' go back to your tent. Your beautiful maid has probably already warmed your bed."

That's the truth.

Ever since Lynn was officially recognized by the Wildling chieftains as "the protector of all living beings in Westeros," Lyanna has refused to return to her mother's tent and has decided to stay by his side.

While Lynn wasn't a saint, he wasn't so beastly as to prey on a fourteen or fifteen-year-old girl; he simply had her take care of mundane tasks like looking after her.

The low moral standards of the savages around him were shocking, constantly reminding him not to follow the crowd, otherwise he would easily be assimilated by this barbaric era.

Lynn got up and stretched, and Qixue, who had been lying at his feet, also got up.

It has grown quite fast, and is now the size of a lamb. Lynn can hardly carry it anymore.

Fortunately, the Bloodthirst can finally fly stably, but it is still a long way from being able to carry people.

"If you catch him alive, remember to let me know."

Lynn said this before he left.

Whether it's useful or not, just consider it a casual move. If the opponent is unlucky enough to not survive, then there's nothing more to say.

Lynn still lived in the same tent and did not take advantage of his new status. When he returned to the tent, Lyanna was still waiting for him.

She used the hot water that was always kept warm by the stove to help him wash his face and soak his feet, and then took out a few fresh lamb ribs to feed Qi Xue.

After spending some time together, the young dragon no longer rejected Lyanna, but it still wouldn't allow any physical contact.

So the little girl held one end of the lamb chop in her hand, trying to entice it to breathe fire like a cat toy, leaving Lynn speechless.

If he hadn't given the dragons instructions, Lyanna would have been burned countless times over.

What does she take the dragon for?

Over the next few days, Lynn continued his sword practice in the morning and archery practice in the afternoon, occasionally resolving disputes for the savages.

They usually prefer to settle disputes with force, and only when even fists can't solve the problem will they come to "Just Lynn". Most people get a satisfactory result, while some leave disappointed.

Lynn was not an omniscient and omnipotent god, and could not fulfill everyone's wishes.

Meanwhile, Mans was busy with the tasks befitting the King Beyond the Wall, including but not limited to finding the Horn of Winter, training soldiers, developing and refining attack plans, and gathering and settling the arriving free people.

He was so active that Lynn thought he had forgotten his existence as "the protector of all living beings in Westeros."

Until one day he sent Quinn to deliver a message that he had captured two live Rangers.

Looks like the raiders are putting in a lot of effort!

At this moment, he was near the "Guardian's Hall" getting used to his newly acquired white oak longbow.

The bow was a gift from the leader of the Nightwalkers, who were also a race skilled in archery, even more so at night than during the day.

Although this bow is not as good as the Bloodraven's weirwood longbow, its performance is comparable to the yew wood longbow commonly used on the continent of Westeros, making it a formidable weapon in the Borderlands.

After a fairly diligent "recovery" training session, Lynn was now able to draw a harder hardwood longbow, and his overall skill level had reached about 70-80% of the Blood Raven Archery technique.

The accuracy is sufficient, but the firing frequency and range are still lacking.

Unfortunately, I lacked the physical strength, and my bow was also not up to par.
