Chapter 43 The Great Wall in Desperation
Chapter 43 The Great Wall in Desperation
Lynn and Mans asked him about the battle at the First Men's Fist Peak, and Samwell answered as much as he could.
In reality, he spent most of his time writing letters by the crow cage, and only had a vague understanding of the attack. What was most frustrating was that those letters had not yet been successfully sent.
He forgot to tie the letters to the ravens' legs and released them all at once.
However, his account of encountering a White Walker on his escape and killing it with a dragonglass dagger drew attention.
Lynn inquired about every detail carefully and finally confirmed that Sam was not lying.
Furthermore, judging from the state of the White Walkers at the time of their death, dragonglass inflicted more damage on them than Valyrian steel swords, but less than Valyrian steel swords imbued with dragonfire.
When Sam learned that the fiery meteor he had seen at the Great Wall was the "Starship" Lynn was on, he was incredibly excited.
"I must record this in the Night's Watch's annals!"
Samwell said this to Jon with great conviction during dinner.
Jon Snow glanced at him sadly, unable to bear reminding him that the Night's Watch's history might be coming to an end.
With the cavalry's horses, the marching speed of the troops increased significantly.
In the borderlands, horses were never distinguished as warhorses or packhorses; free people mostly used whatever they had, because there were so few of them.
Mans persuaded the giants to stop riding mammoths and instead walk, so that the mammoths could carry some of the baggage.
Despite their hurried pace, they arrived a full day ahead of schedule at a point less than a mile from the Great Wall, and Lynn finally saw the legendary Wall of Despair.
In fact, he had seen the Great Wall countless times in Blood Raven's memory, but the sight he saw with his own eyes was far beyond the blurry images in his memory.
It was early morning, and the eastern horizon was still a touch of pink, gradually fading to light gray above it. Sword of Dawn, one of the seven wandering constellations, hung in the southwest, its bright white star at the hilt shining like a diamond.
As the sun rises, the dark, gray forest below slowly reveals various colors such as green, gold, red, and brown. Above the soldiers, oaks, elms, sentinels, and weirwoods, stands the magnificent Great Wall of Despair, a giant white ice wall that gleams and stretches as far as the eye can see on either side.
The average height of the relatively flat eastern section of the Great Wall is 700 feet, which is about 200 meters.
Lynn had seen many buildings taller than it, but considering its length of 100 leagues (nearly 500 kilometers) stretching from the Grand Canyon in the west to Seal Bay in the east, it far surpassed any known human creation.
Under the primitive conditions thousands of years ago, even with the help of giants, it would have been impossible for our ancestors to build such a miraculous structure without the involvement of magic.
Lynn and Mans rode to the edge of Ghostwood to check the situation at the top of the Wall, while the main force remained deep in the forest behind them.
Giants and mammoths are too conspicuous and would be easily spotted by the guards on the Great Wall.
They observed for a while and found that the top of the wall was calm, with a motionless figure standing every ten yards or so.
"The scarecrow guard is an old trick that's been around for decades."
Mans said with a chuckle:
"It seems that Casa and the others have not arrived yet. It will take at least three days to get from the Long Cart Tower to Black Castle."
"Do you want to let the dragon go up and take a look?"
"That's exactly why I came here—to verify whether the Great Wall truly rejects magical creatures."
As Lynn spoke, he waved behind him, and Qi Xue immediately crawled to his side.
Because it was invaded by the Three-Eyed Raven as a temporary vessel, the ferocious nature of its Bloodline was forcibly erased, making it more docile and obedient than any dragon in history.
Of course, the prerequisite is to gain its approval first.
Lynn smoothly possessed Bloodlust using his shapeshifting ability. After a short adjustment period, he took a few steps forward, flapped his wings, and instantly took off.
He suppressed the instinctive urge to roar, circled a few times in mid-air, and used the tactile sensation of the wing membrane to search for a wind he could use.
The wind was quickly found, and Lynn's flight altitude began to rise rapidly, soon surpassing the height of the Great Wall.
The Wall looked quite different from the sky, but Lynn had no time to appreciate it. He carefully examined the top of the wall through the dragon's eyes and found that there were only three people on guard duty, and they seemed quite indifferent.
One of the guards was baking bread on an iron stove, while the other two chatted while guarding a huge horn fixed to a shelf.
After flying around once, Lynn realized there wasn't much to see on the top of the wall, so he climbed up again, preparing to take advantage of the lax defenses and cross the Wall to scout out Castle Black.
Just as he adjusted his posture, a strange sense of being watched and oppressed suddenly came over him.
The feeling was immense and profound, as if the massive ice wall below was a living being with its own will, ready to raise its neck and swallow him whole at any moment, like an ancient serpent.
Of course, this feeling was "translated" through a blood-soaked will. In Lynn's view, it was more like a kind of suppression specifically formed against a particular existence, just like how a cat is born to suppress a mouse.
For Lynn, this wasn't even a danger, because reason told him that it was just an ice wall and couldn't possibly suddenly transform into some kind of giant, moving creature.
But as Lynn got closer to the Great Wall, he could feel the blood-soaked struggle and resistance, which eventually became so strong that it almost drove his will away.
Lynn swayed in the air for a moment, then quickly comforted Qi Xue and steadied himself.
The Great Wall was indeed strange, but it wasn't a substantial method; it was more like a form of mental interference.
At this moment, the will to weep blood had shrunk to its deepest point, and Lynn had completely taken control of the dragon's body. He could fly over whenever he wanted.
But his awe of the mysterious power stopped him at the last moment.
Lynn controlled the angle of the dragon wings, smoothly drawing an arc before plummeting into the Ghost Shadow Forest.
This process is theoretically much more thrilling than a roller coaster, but because Lynn was observing the world with the dragon's eyes, sensing wind speed with the dragon's skin, and even judging speed and distance using the dragon's mechanism, he did not experience any fear or excitement.
During his rapid dive, Lynn accurately determined the appropriate altitude to take off, then suddenly spread his wings to slow down. The inflated wing membranes caught the air, instantly offsetting the force of the fall, and he landed steadily back on the ground.
When Lynn returned to his body, Mance was standing guard beside him, sword in hand.
"This is the first time I've ever seen a 'Dragon Spirit.' I've never even heard of a shapeshifter who can control dragons before."
Mans praised him, but despite his weathered life, his eyes were still full of envy.
Who hasn't dreamed of becoming a dragon knight during their boyhood? But Lynn's methods are far more impressive than those of a dragon knight.
While calming down his sobbing emotions, Lynn said to Mance:
"In theory, all Targaryen dragon riders are 'dragon spirits,' but the will of dragons is too strong, and the degree of integration between humans and dragons cannot reach the level of that between shapeshifters and ordinary creatures. My case is a special one."
"After all, you are a 'Child of the Stars' and a 'Dragonborn'."
Mans said with a smile.
For him, the stronger Lynn was, the better.
