Chapter 743 Intimidation
Chapter 743 Intimidation
Let's turn back time a little.
Three sixth-level wizards from another branch of the Colmar family had gathered early with their partners in a small palace on the other side of the plane. The palace's decor was identical to the banquet hall outside: marble floors, carved pillars, and perfectly lit crystals floating overhead.
But the expressions on these people's faces were completely different from those of the guests at the banquet; they showed no sign of relaxation whatsoever.
"That old man really made a big show of it."
A sixth-level female wizard from the Colmar family held a teacup, her tone laced with barely concealed sarcasm.
She was the most senior member of this lineage, and the edge of her scale-like robe rustled softly with each movement. "They've even invited several level-seven wizards; they've probably used up all the connections they've built up over the years."
Her partner, a tall, slender male sixth-level wizard with gentle features, sat beside her, his tone much calmer: "It doesn't matter. We've also invited elders from our family, so the seventh-level wizards won't lose. Besides, the seventh-level wizards are just here to show their support; they're not really going to get involved in this kind of situation. Both sides have seventh-level wizards; if something goes wrong, it'll be difficult for anyone to handle."
"Over the years, everyone's connections are pretty much the same, there's not much to say about them."
Another male sixth-level wizard from the Colmar family took over the conversation, his fingers tapping lightly on the armrest of his chair, the rhythm revealing an uncontrollable restlessness.
"The key is the level six. What we need to focus on most is who David and his wife can invite."
"Don't worry about that."
The other male sixth-level wizard from Colmar sitting opposite him put down his wine glass, a smug smile spreading across his face.
His robes were embroidered with a circle of deep purple runes on the cuffs, which was the crest of his wife's family.
"This time I spent a lot of extra money to hire a few helpers, who are definitely capable of dealing with a kid who just became a level six not long ago." As he spoke, his gaze suddenly shifted slightly, and a look of joy appeared on his face.
"Perfect timing, they're here. Let's go see them."
The light from the teleportation array lit up and then went out in the small square outside the palace, and three figures emerged from the light.
The one walking at the very front was almost unrecognizable as human.
Its body is like a constantly wriggling, translucent gel, its color slowly switching between light green and dark blue, with tiny bubbles constantly rising and bursting on its surface.
No one present would underestimate it because of its appearance.
The second one, right behind it, always maintained a completely lightning elemental form.
It was a human-shaped silhouette made of high-density ionized gas, with crackling arcs of electricity constantly leaping around it, illuminating the surrounding ground in an intermittent manner.
Each flash of lightning carried an extremely unstable and dangerous sense of oppression.
The one who came last had a completely different style.
His massive, almost exaggerated muscles stretched his robes taut, and a two-handed greatsword almost as tall as him hung at his waist.
Rather than a wizard, he's more like a berserker who just emerged from some wild and untamed plane.
The three level-six wizards each exuded an undisguised aura of ferocity.
The male sixth-level wizard from Colmar greeted him with a beaming smile, rubbing his hands together in front of him, adopting an extremely humble posture.
"Thank you for coming all this way! All the terms we agreed on have been prepared, and we're just waiting for you to come and inspect the goods."
As he spoke, he courteously led the three into the rest area inside the palace, personally pouring each of them a cup of tea brewed with rare ingredients. "It'll be up to you three in a bit. As I said before, you don't need to actually do anything. Just make an appearance at the banquet and put some pressure on them. It would be best if you could also 'invite' those people David invited out of the venue."
He emphasized the word "please," the meaning of which was self-evident.
The wizard dressed as a berserker among the three crossed his arms and let out a muffled "hmm" from his throat.
The wizard in slime form produced even more bubbles on his body, which could be considered a nod.
The one who had transformed into lightning elemental remained silent, crackling all the while.
Both sides confirmed the details of the contract one last time. Finally, the berserker wizard in charge of the negotiations said in a hoarse voice:
"It's just adding pressure to the other party, it's not a big problem. As long as you pay the balance, our contract will end." Upon hearing this, the male sixth-level wizard in Colmar's smile froze for a moment, then returned to normal.
But his eye twitched very subtly.
To get these three people to help, he took out most of his personal savings accumulated over the years and also used a very valuable favor from his wife's family.
Although it was described as a one-time transaction, the cost was so high that he had to repeatedly convince himself that it was "worth the money."
If they could outdo the other side at this wedding and make David's guests back down, then they could then rightfully take over as the main branch of the Colmar family.
As long as it succeeds, this price is worth it.
"Of course, of course."
He smiled and said that his enthusiasm remained the same, but there was a hint of barely perceptible heartache hidden in his voice.
"Now, let's see what kind of people that little David can find."
The teleportation array lit up again, and the group left the palace at the same time, appearing at the other end of the banquet hall.
The banquet hall, being large enough, had multiple entrances and exits, designed from the outset to prevent the two factions from meeting and clashing beforehand. Just as the wedding was about to begin, the two groups, led by their respective level six wizards, inevitably converged. On the other side, the level seven wizards remained silent.
Even when different factions of the Colmar family invited level seven wizards, the two sides simply gathered in the rest area to talk as usual.
Some were holding tea and discussing the details of the Star Ring Federation's recent military reforms; some were exchanging research data from their respective planes in hushed tones; and some were simply sitting there with their eyes closed, resting.
Occasionally, someone would glance in the direction where the level six wizards were confronting each other, but that was all.
To them, such friction between juniors was no different from ants fighting, not worth putting down their teacups. Therefore, the real force to be displayed at this banquet was the group of level six wizards.
Three sixth-level wizards from another branch of the Colmar family led their guests into the venue first.
Behind them followed a large group of sixth-level wizards, including their partners, representatives from their partners' families, and three unfamiliar faces who had been specially invited.
As soon as the three appeared, the three hired level-six wizards released their auras without hesitation.
The wizard dressed as a berserker slammed his greatsword into the ground, and the sheer force of the impact created a ring of fine cracks in the marble slab.
The lightning-elemental wizard's body suddenly crackled with electricity, creating a blinding blue-green light that exploded across the banquet hall. The slime-form wizard expanded his size several times over, his translucent gelatinous body soaring high into the air, casting a large, writhing shadow.
The combined auras of the three level-six wizards pressed down on the central area of the banquet hall without any attempt to conceal their presence.
David had already said goodbye to Jemin and the other man and was now surrounded by several guests.
As the host of the banquet, his smile hadn't completely faded, but his eyes had already involuntarily swept towards the group opposite him. His gaze quickly swept over the three unfamiliar level six wizards, then looked at Jemin standing by the flower bed on his side, giving him a meaningful look. The meaning was clear: be careful, these guys are tough opponents.
Jemin, who had been looking somewhat dazed, finally snapped out of it.
He had already completed his sensory analysis the moment the three level-six wizards released their auras, and only then did he turn his attention to them. It's begun?
Jemin instinctively looked at Augusta beside him.
Beside him, Augusta remained expressionless, only letting out a very short "hmm" through her nose. "Let's finish this quickly then..."
Jemin put down his juice glass, turned to face the three level-six wizards who were unleashing their full power, and walked over.
As he lifted his leg, Jemin unhesitatingly unleashed his imposing presence.
boom!!!
The moment he unleashed his aura, the entire banquet hall seemed to be put on pause.
The power that had been building up inside Jemin was released all at once, like a giant beast that had been sleeping at the bottom of the sea for hundreds of years suddenly turning over.
Almost all the wizards below level six present stopped what they were doing at the same time.
Someone had just raised their glass when their hand froze in mid-air.
Someone was about to speak to the person next to them, but when they opened their mouth, they forgot what they wanted to say.
Those Level 6 guests who were key participants in the standoff were even more horrified to find that their bodies were refusing to move.
That's when faced with natural disasters, biological instincts forcefully take over muscle control.
My mind was screaming for me to move, but my legs were rooted to the spot, unable to take a single step.
Even the level seven wizards in the rest area stopped talking.
The wizard Augusta paused for a moment in mid-air with his teacup in hand, then turned his head slightly, a hint of undisguised surprise flashing in his eyes, which were as black as Bert Villa's.
A level seven wizard next to him whispered something. He didn't answer, but just looked at Jemin's back, a meaningful smile slowly appearing on his lips.
As Jemin's primary target, the three invited Level 6 wizards at the forefront naturally became his first priority.
The aura they had just released was crushed the instant Jemin unleashed his own; they were completely overwhelmed. They felt as if an overwhelming tsunami had crashed down upon them, making even the air they breathed heavy and viscous, requiring several times more effort with each breath than usual.
It was as if they were staring directly into an abyss, as if what stood before them was not a level 5 wizard, but some kind of enormous and terrifying being.
The wizard dressed as a berserker began to tremble uncontrollably with the hand that gripped the hilt of his greatsword.
He could feel every muscle fiber in his body roaring and wanting to escape, but reason told him that the enemy in front of him was so close that any attempt to escape would be instantly detected.
Wizards in slime form suffer the most.
Its body lost its stability as Jieming approached, and irregular ripples spread wildly across its translucent gelatinous surface. Small pieces of gelatinous material at the edges kept falling off due to excessive stress, leaving behind puddles of still-wriggling residue on the ground.
The elementalized being desperately tried to maintain its humanoid form, but the ionized gas kept dissipating under pressure, and the crackling of electric arcs turned into rapid bursts.
Its outline is repeatedly crushed and reformed, its shape resembling a candle flame about to be blown out by the wind.
Jemin approached the three of them.
His steps were light, each one unhurried, as if he were merely a passerby who had glanced in this direction. Then he stopped, smiled calmly, and nodded.
That smile looked like he was greeting a neighbor.
Gentle, polite, with curved eyebrows and eyes, even the angle of the upturned corners of her mouth is just right.
Then he walked straight past it.
Beads of cold sweat slid down the berserker's forehead, rolling down his cheeks and into his collar.
It was only then that the slime and the elemental wizard realized that they were breathing rapidly. It was because the stress response was too strong, causing their souls to instinctively simulate breathing.
They still dared not move, like three statues temporarily nailed to the ground.
Jemin walked through the crowd and stood in front of David.
He took out the crystal from his sleeve: "Happy wedding, this is my gift to you."
He handed the crystal to David and said a few words of congratulations.
Then he turned around, walked through the still-stagnant crowd, and stood next to Augusta again.
As he returned to his original spot, Jemin withdrew his imposing manner.
The overwhelming sense of oppression, like a ferocious beast returning to its nest, quickly retreated back into Jemin's body, as if it had never existed.
The air in the banquet hall became lighter again, and a gentle breeze blew through the flowerbeds, carrying a few fallen leaves.
Almost all the wizards present below level six breathed a sigh of relief at the same time.
Some people noticed their hands, still trembling slightly, as they held their wine glasses. Someone muttered something under their breath, but the sound was too soft to tell who they were cursing. The three invited Level 6 wizards finally felt they could move again.
The wizard in slime form reassembled his body, silently reabsorbing the gelatinous residue that had just detached back into his body, but more and denser bubbles continued to emerge from his surface than usual.
Its sensory organs turned to the Colmar level six wizard who employed them, its voice hoarse and direct:
"I'm sorry, I can't handle this. I can't keep you company any longer."
The other two nodded silently.
The berserker-dressed wizard pulled his greatsword from the ground, the tip leaving a shallow dent in the marble slab, but he didn't care about that anymore. The arcs of electricity on the wizard's lightning-elemental body stabilized again, but his outline was a full size smaller than when he arrived.
The three of them returned the wages they had received from their employers intact, then headed towards the nearest teleportation array without looking back. They moved quickly, appearing to be walking, but giving the impression of running.
When the teleportation array lit up beneath their feet, the three of them finally breathed a sigh of relief, as if they had escaped.
