Chapter 23 Hidden
Chapter 23 Hidden
As soon as she said that, several people in the neighborhood felt embarrassed. They knew that if they had said it at a different time and place, they would have definitely started arguing with her.
The middle-aged policeman frowned and asked, "What woman?"
Zhou Fengchen secretly shook his head. If this case gets dragged into the woman, it would be strange if it could be solved. It might even cause a big problem.
Song Yao said, "We can't really explain it either. Last night, it sounded like a woman was calling Xiaofeng's name downstairs."
The middle-aged policeman asked everyone present, "Is there a mentally unstable woman in your neighborhood?"
"No." The strangers looked at each other and shook their heads.
Zhou Fengchen didn't speak, but looked at the old lady and the little girl on the first floor. He found that they were keeping their heads down and not saying a word, their bodies twisting and turning, looking somewhat uneasy.
The middle-aged policeman shook his head, perhaps also feeling that the "seems" explanation was not very reliable. He then asked many more questions, including whether the people present had any contact with the deceased before his death, or whether they had heard anything about him. However, the answers he received were not very helpful. In the end, he asked a short-haired policewoman next to him to stay behind and left with the rest of the policemen.
Zhou Fengchen was the last to leave. Before leaving, he glanced at the policewoman and the two girls in the room and suddenly had a premonition that something bad was going to happen tonight. He opened his mouth to warn them, but didn't know what to say.
Soon the entire neighborhood quieted down.
Zhou Fengchen stood alone in the dimly lit stairwell, thinking it over and over. He felt that this matter was too disgusting. He had originally thought that as long as that "powerful guy" did not provoke him, everyone would live in peace. But now that someone had died, wouldn't it be a bit unreasonable for him to remain indifferent?
With that thought in mind, he went downstairs and knocked on the door of the old lady's house on the first floor.
The little girl opened the door, standing guard and asking, "Brother, is something wrong?"
Zhou Fengchen smiled and said, "Would it be convenient for me to come in and sit for a while?"
The little girl hesitated for a moment, then stepped aside.
The room was small and filled with old-fashioned furniture, which was not arranged very neatly, and there was a musty smell of decay everywhere.
The old lady was sitting at the table, struggling to eat her pancakes. When she saw him come in, she grinned and asked, "Have you eaten yet?"
"I've already eaten." Zhou Fengchen smiled and sat down on a small stool.
The little girl also sat down at the table, picked up a pancake and ate it with the only pickled vegetable on the table.
It's obvious that their family is very poor.
"Are you the only ones at home? Where is the others?" Zhou Fengchen asked, puzzled.
The old lady sighed and didn't speak. The little girl lowered her head and said, "My parents died in a car accident a few years ago, and my grandfather died after that."
"I'm sorry," Zhou Fengchen said, looking embarrassed.
The little girl and the old lady stopped talking and just kept eating.
After a while, the little girl suddenly became impatient and asked, "What do you want?"
Zhou Fengchen thought for a moment, then said directly, "I want to know about the woman who called out to Song Xiaofeng last night. You must know, right?"
The old woman and the little girl's expressions changed. The little girl said coldly, "Being too curious can kill you!"
"Do you think I'm going to die?" Zhou Fengchen pointed to his own nose. "The mother and son in my room tried to harm me, but they ended up in the underworld."
The old woman and the little girl exchanged a glance, then shook their heads and said, "It's different. I knew the mother and son in your room before they died. They were pitiful people, but they had a conscience and didn't harm others."
Zhou Fengchen felt he had hit a dead end. The grandfather and grandson seemed completely unconcerned about how he had sent the mother and son to the underworld, leaving him speechless.
"You can leave now, we're getting ready for bed." The little girl got up to see them out.
Helpless, Zhou Fengchen got up and went out. Just as she reached the door, she heard the old woman's voice from inside: "They shouldn't have called the police. Something bad will happen tonight!"
"What did you say?"
Just as Zhou Fengchen was about to ask for clarification, the door slammed shut and the lights went out.
He stood there stunned for a while, then shook his head with a wry smile. He returned to the right room on the second floor, stood outside the door for a moment, and wondered, "Will something bad happen?"
The ghost didn't know who it would harm next, and if it suddenly called out the names of these three girls, it probably wouldn't be able to stop it, so it knocked on the door.
The door opened quickly; it was a policewoman who opened it. She looked like she had just taken a shower, her hair was still wet. She looked at Zhou Fengchen and asked with a serious expression, "Is there something you need?"
"It's like this..." Zhou Fengchen glanced into the room and noticed that Song Yao and the other person were also looking over. He said, "If, and I mean if, someone calls your names in the middle of the night, whatever you do, don't answer."
The three people inside the room were all confused. Did anyone here know their names?
The policewoman pointed at Zhou Fengchen and said, "Hey! I'm warning you, talking nonsense and disturbing the peace, or I'll take you to the police station tomorrow!"
He slammed the door shut.
Zhou Fengchen stood outside the door for a long time, feeling that he was destined to be a hard worker. He had good intentions, but ended up pleasing neither side.
"I must be crazy to meddle in your business..."
He spat angrily, turned around and went upstairs. After thinking for a while in his room, he felt that he still had to mind his own business. He was sleeping upstairs, but what if a few people died downstairs? What would that be?
He took a shower, grabbed a blanket, and ran to the balcony to sleep on the floor, then kept a close eye on the movements downstairs.
……
Inside the room on the second floor.
The policewoman, drying her hair, asked curiously, "What was that guy doing just now? He was quite handsome, but it's a shame he seemed a bit off."
Song Yao and Zhang Bi sat on the sofa, staring blankly at the TV. Upon hearing this, Song Yao said, "It seems he lives upstairs. There are only three households in our building. We just moved in and haven't had much contact with him yet."
The policewoman said "Oh," putting the matter out of her mind, and instead comforted the two of them.
The three of them talked and watched TV. Time passed quickly, and before they knew it, it was midnight. It was pitch black outside, like a cloudy day, and the wind was howling.
The policewoman yawned and said, "It's 12 o'clock, go to sleep! Don't overthink it. The autopsy report will come out tomorrow, and the truth will come out."
If we hadn't talked about that, Song Yao and the other woman would have been fine. Looking at Song Xiaofeng's room, even though the door was closed, they still felt a little scared and huddled together, trembling. "We're not sleepy yet, Officer Wang, you should go to sleep first."
Looking at them, the policewoman suddenly felt a little scared, and her sleepiness vanished instantly.
"Knock knock..."
Just then, there was a light, gentle knock on the door.
Suddenly, all three were startled. The policewoman frowned and said, "Is it that kid upstairs again?"
He got up to open the door, about to start cursing, but the outside was empty, not a soul in sight. The dim lights in the stairwell flickered, and a few scraps of paper spun and floated down.
"strangeness!"
The policewoman closed the door, muttered something, and returned to the sofa, saying, "Nobody's here!"
Song Yao and Zhang Bi exchanged a glance, then leaned closer together, saying, "Could it be a stray cat?"
"Maybe……"
The policewoman nodded, but before she could finish speaking, there was another knock on the door.
"Knock knock..."
This time, all three of them heard it clearly; such a sound was definitely not something a wildcat could produce.
The three men's expressions changed. The policewoman gritted her teeth, cautiously approached, and then suddenly pulled open the door.
The outside was still deserted.
"Bang!" The policewoman slammed the door shut and returned to the sofa, her face deathly pale.
"Officer Wang, who...who knocked on the door?" Zhang Bi asked in a trembling voice.
"I don't know!" The policewoman moved closer to them and said, "Maybe... it's just a prank by that guy upstairs?"
The three of them stopped talking and watched the television cautiously.
The TV program was a shopping channel, which was very boring, but none of the three of them paid any attention to it. They just stared at it intently, keeping their ears open for any knocking sounds.
After a while, the knocking stopped. The three of them breathed a sigh of relief and were about to start talking when suddenly their eyes widened and their scalps tingled with fear.
The TV program had changed; it now showed a row of sofas with three girls sitting on them—it was…themselves!
