Chapter 48 The Vanished Banknotes
Chapter 48 The Vanished Banknotes
Back in the private room, Monk Yuanzhi shrugged off the four young ladies and quietly asked Zhou Fengchen, "Do you know those people from just now?"
Zhou Fengchen said, "I know him. We've sparred before, but his skills are terrible."
Monk Yuanzhi nodded and said, "That monk is too strange; a little girl is riding on his head."
Zhou Fengchen said, "You saw it too? To be honest, I not only recognize them, but I also recognize the little devil riding on the monk's neck."
"You know that kid too? Where did you meet him?" Monk Yuanzhi was a little confused.
Zhou Fengchen said, "I have a grudge against a hairy monster from a shamanistic sect. That hairy monster is very powerful and keeps five strange little ghosts. The one that this monk is riding on is one of them. I don't know why they got into this fight. I suspect that hairy monster is nearby."
Someone praised as very capable by Zhou Fengchen must be no ordinary person. Monk Yuanzhi said awkwardly, "How about we..."
Zhou Fengchen waved his hand: "Let's play our game. The long-haired monster is no match for me. If he dares to come, I'll make sure to catch him this time."
"All done!"
Relieved, Monk Yuanzhi turned and returned to his seat, putting his arm around a girl in each arm. "Ouch! My face is a little itchy. Can someone scratch it for me with their lips?"
"Hehehe..."
Which of the girls in the nightclub wasn't a seasoned pro at the pleasure quarters? The two girls giggled and each kissed Monk Yuanzhi on one cheek, leaving two deep lipstick marks.
Zhou Fengchen stared wide-eyed, then looked at his two sisters and hurriedly ran over, panting, saying, "Oh dear! My hands are a little itchy, can one of you scratch them with your breasts?"
"Hehe, you're so naughty!"
"You bastard! Ouch! That hurts!"
"Hahaha...bro, you're awesome, KLAS!"
"You're too kind, sir!"
The two brothers then went on a wild ride, drinking beer, playing dice, and singing random, nonsensical songs at karaoke, leaving the four girls completely bewildered.
Then the six of them ran onto the dance floor together. Speaking of dancing, although Monk Yuanzhi's dancing was terrible, at least he looked presentable. Zhou Fengchen, on the other hand, was completely hopeless. It was hard to tell whether he was doing martial arts or dancing. He just wildly swung and twisted around. As he danced, he realized that he was the only one left on the dance floor, while the other five were lying on the ground.
……
"suck--"
At 11 p.m., having finally had their fill of fun, the two left the nightclub carrying a jumble of things. Monk Yuanzhi, clutching his slightly pale face, gasped for breath, "Brother, your dancing was absolutely amazing!"
Zhou Fengchen could still tell the difference between good and bad words, and he laughed and said, "You've gone too far and haven't been able to control yourself."
Just then, a group of people hurried past from the street corner ahead. Zhou Fengchen frowned and said, "It's Jiang Suoshen and Monk Yimu's group. They've stopped playing too. What are they doing?"
Monk Yuanzhi also found it strange and said, "Doesn't that lead to the suburbs?"
"Let's go! Let's go and take a look."
Zhou Fengchen greeted them and took the lead in catching up.
……
Jiang Suoshen and his group looked flustered and ran along, as if something terrible had happened. The further they walked, the more remote the area became, and they gradually entered the old town. All they could see were old buildings from the 1970s and 1980s, and the environment was very complicated.
The weather had been gloomy all day, and now it started to drizzle. Zhou Fengchen and Yuan Zhi had been sneaking around for half a day, getting soaked to the bone. They were exhausted from not sleeping for more than a day. Seeing that Jiang Suoshen and his group showed no sign of stopping, they lost patience, cursed, gave up, and turned back to their rented room.
……
Upon arriving at the room, the two almost simultaneously threw their belongings into the bathroom, only to have them slammed against the door, preventing either of them from getting in.
Zhou Fengchen lightly tripped him and nudged him with his elbow, sending Monk Yuanzhi nimbly stumbling back five or six meters before he plopped down on the sofa, sighing, "I'm impressed!"
"You're too kind!"
Zhou Fengchen chuckled, closed the door, and was just taking off his clothes when Yuanzhi the monk's heart-wrenching wail rang out from outside: "Brother! It's terrible! The money's gone!"
Zhou Fengchen's heart skipped a beat. He quickly opened the door and ran into the bedroom. "What happened?"
"Look!" Monk Yuanzhi was holding a quilt, but the quilt was empty underneath; the stacks of banknotes that had been hidden there had vanished.
Zhou Fengchen's head buzzed for a moment. He quickly thought it over and instantly locked onto the old lady and the little girl downstairs. They had been very hostile towards him lately, so maybe they were the ones who did it!
Thinking of this, she turned and ran downstairs, but stopped at the door, staring at the lock. There were no signs of forced entry. How did they get in? Something's not right!
Monk Yuanzhi ran out and called out, "Brother, where are you going? Come in, come in, look this way."
Zhou Fengchen returned to the bedroom. Monk Yuanzhi pointed to the other side of the bed, where there was a large iron basin left by the landlord. It was unclear whether it was for bathing or washing clothes, as it had never been used. At this moment, it was filled with ash and had a faint smoky smell.
Zhou Fengchen squatted down and rummaged through the ashes with his hands, revealing a corner of a banknote that hadn't been completely burned.
Monk Yuanzhi's eyes widened, and he squatted down as well, picking up the corner of the banknote to examine it. Then he exchanged a glance with Zhou Fengchen, and they both burst out cursing, "Who did this?! Who the hell is so despicable?!"
"Damn it, decades of hard work gone, all gone in one fell swoop! Who was the idiot to do this?"
The two cursed at each other for a long time before finally calming down. Monk Yuanzhi thought for a moment and asked, "Who still has the key to our room?"
Zhou Fengchen said, "I don't know either. When the landlord rented it to me, she gave me all the keys. Could she have had a spare?"
Monk Yuanzhi said, "Landlords usually don't open the door to tenants' rooms casually. Could it be a previous tenant?"
Zhou Fengchen shook his head. "Probably not. This house used to be haunted. A mother and child were sent to the underworld by me. Those tenants who were scared away wouldn't dare to come back."
"Then..." Monk Yuanzhi suddenly slapped his forehead, "Something's not right! There's something fishy about this."
"What's strange about this?" Zhou Fengchen asked.
Monk Yuanzhi said, "Think about it, this is money, not waste paper. What kind of person would see it and not take it with them, but instead put it in a big basin and burn it properly? Isn't that insane?"
"This..." Zhou Fengchen thought for a moment, glanced at the ground, and suddenly shuddered, lying down.
Monk Yuanzhi found it strange and asked, "What are you doing?"
Zhou Fengchen waved his hand and pointed to the ground, "Look!"
Monk Yuanzhi lay down and peered sideways, noticing a row of strange, scattered footprints on the ground. Because the floor was dark, they were barely visible. He asked, "What the hell is this?"
These footprints don't resemble human footprints; they only have three toes, or rather, webbed feet, and are somewhat like those of a large duck.
Zhou Fengchen didn't say anything, but slowly followed the footprints out. Monk Yuanzhi immediately followed.
The footprints led to the main entrance, with a gap in front of and behind the threshold, as if they were walking through the door.
The two followed the dim stairwell lights all the way down to the bottom, where the footprints became indistinguishable.
Just then, a soft sobbing sound came from not far away. The two looked up and were immediately dumbfounded.
