Chapter 121 The Cave
Chapter 121 The Cave
Monk Yuanzhi got up from the ground, looked around, and then looked at the nunnery. "Holy crap! This is amazing! Is this where I've been all this time?"
Zhou Fengchen, wary of his surroundings, said, "You think this is still a hotel? You should be grateful you got out alive."
"I wouldn't say I'm secretly happy," Monk Yuanzhi said seriously. "I just feel pretty great. Think about it, a deserted temple, monsters, how scary is that? But I lived in there for half a month. If this were a story from Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio, I would be the protagonist. My surname is Zhang, and with a little embellishment, I would be the handsome and dashing Zhang Sheng."
Zhou Fengchen looked at Yuan Zhi's fat face and big belly, wearing only a pair of underwear, like a fatter version of the Haier Brothers, and had absolutely nothing to do with being handsome and dashing. He chuckled and said, "Monk, can we stop talking nonsense?"
This is the real Yuanzhi monk! He's so shameless, and he has so many similarities to me.
Monk Yuanzhi laughed along, then looked around and said, "Let's slip away before the monster notices us, let's run away like hell."
Zhou Fengchen shook his head and said, "No! This monster has killed too many people. Let's go and earn some good karma. Also, that bastard Doromo is in there. I want to take this opportunity to kill him and prevent future troubles."
Monk Yuanzhi was troubled. Pointing to himself, he said, "I... I'm only wearing a pair of big shorts. How am I supposed to catch demons?"
Zhou Fengchen took off his coat and threw it to him, "Make do with this, don't be a coward! Just do it!"
"Let's do it!"
Monk Yuanzhi put on his coat, and the two of them quietly approached the temple gate.
Pushing open the temple door, it was pitch black inside, the ground was overgrown with weeds, and there wasn't a soul in sight; it was eerily quiet.
Zhou Fengchen led the way, followed by Monk Yuanzhi. They trudged through the weeds to the main hall, which reeked of decay. The beams had collapsed and spiderwebs covered the walls, bearing no resemblance to the nuns, Buddhas, and upright figures they had encountered earlier.
Finding no one in the main hall, the two went to the side halls, but after searching both side halls thoroughly, they found nothing.
Monk Yuanzhi looked around and then lowered his voice, saying, "These demons' illusions are very powerful. Is this the way we're going to search? We might get trapped again."
Zhou Fengchen was also a little scared, but after thinking about it, he thought it was unlikely and said, "It shouldn't be. This kind of environment is perfectly normal. We've already escaped, so they'll definitely come to kill us if they want to. Let's go back and see."
The two walked through the weeds toward the back hall. After turning a corner, a mountain appeared in front of them, as if it had been cleaved by an axe. An entire mountain wall blocked their way, and the original courtyard for pilgrims was gone.
Just as the two were wondering what was going on, two figures suddenly appeared in front of them, one in red and the other in purple.
"It's those two old women!" Zhou Fengchen gripped his knife and was about to rush out.
Monk Yuanzhi grabbed him and whispered, "Don't rush. Let me chant a couple of sutras to calm them down before we make our move."
"Will this work?" Zhou Fengchen asked hesitantly.
"It can do it! Just you wait and see!" Monk Yuanzhi stepped forward, coughed, and chanted: "When Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva was practicing the profound Prajnaparamita, he perceived that the five aggregates are empty, and thus transcended all suffering and distress, Shariputra..."
The woman in red and the old lady, who had been looking gloomy and seemingly waiting for them, paused upon hearing the Buddhist scriptures, then revealed a look of rapture.
Zhou Fengchen was somewhat impressed by Monk Yuanzhi; this guy was a real talent. He immediately cut his palm, leaped out, and chopped at the old woman's head.
By the time the old lady realized what was happening, it was too late. Her head fell cleanly to the ground, and her body trembled three times before transforming into a headless giant hedgehog.
The woman in red beside him was startled and tried to run away, but Zhou Fengchen seized the opportunity and slashed off one of her arms.
The woman was also fierce. With a strange cry, she instantly transformed into a giant butterfly, flapping her wings and scattering pollen, before lunging forward with three sharp claws.
Zhou Fengchen scoffed. He had been studying techniques since elementary school, focusing on attack. Playing dirty tricks on him might frustrate him, but resorting to violence would be a different story.
He arrived behind the giant butterfly almost instantly and stabbed it in the back, the blade and hilt almost completely penetrating it.
The large butterfly let out a miserable cry, its wings flapping slower and slower until it collapsed to the ground with a thud, leaving a pool of blood. Staggering, it looked at Monk Yuanzhi and spoke in a human voice: "Zhizhi, we were husband and wife, save me!"
After finishing reciting the sutra, the monk Yuanzhi, who had been in a daze, suddenly showed a look of pity.
Zhou Fengchen was taken aback. "Holy crap! Monk, you've played with butterflies before?"
Monk Yuanzhi gritted his teeth, "Stop talking nonsense, just kill him."
Zhou Fengchen twisted the hilt of his knife, and the giant butterfly straightened its belly and died.
To prevent the two monsters from reviving, Zhou Fengchen drew his sword and hacked them to pieces one by one. He then waited quietly for a while until they showed no reaction before he breathed a sigh of relief. It seemed that the inability to kill them was a problem with the illusion.
At this moment, the monk Yuanzhi sighed softly, his voice tinged with melancholy: "Since ancient times, those who are deeply in love have only ended up with regret, and this regret will last forever..."
"You're kidding me." Zhou Fengchen ignored him and parted the bushes where the two monsters had appeared. He saw a dark cave at the foot of the mountain wall, from which a strange scream could be faintly heard.
The two exchanged a glance and cautiously entered the cave.
The cave is about three or four meters high and wide, and it is deep and bottomless. However, there is a faint light coming from the innermost part. The walls are covered with moss, and the air is a bit humid and hot, with a fishy smell.
The two walked in for a while, but before they reached the end, Zhou Fengchen noticed that Monk Yuanzhi's expression was off. He rubbed his nose and whispered, "How was it playing with the butterflies? Did you get covered in powder?"
Monk Yuanzhi was furious. "Can you please stop bringing up things that are hard to swallow? I'm feeling a bit upset. To be honest, Xiao Hong is quite nice, it's just a pity she's a demon."
Zhou Fengchen curled his lip, "Look at your pathetic self."
"Don't talk about me like that!" Monk Yuanzhi retorted sarcastically, "Have you ever kissed a woman? Have you ever hugged a woman?"
This really reopened Zhou Fengchen's old wound. What grown man doesn't want a woman? He pointed at Monk Yuanzhi, "Hey! Don't force me. When we get back, I'll have my mom introduce me to someone. You'll be so envious!"
Monk Yuanzhi scoffed, "If you, with your scoundrel-like appearance, could find a girl, I'd call you my brother."
"You said it yourself!"
As the two were talking, the light ahead became brighter. After turning a corner, they saw many pits on both sides of the cave, filled with desiccated corpses.
Zhou Fengchen was taken aback. "I understand! No wonder there was no daytime in the illusion. It turns out we've been in the cave all along. Doromo and the others aren't here; they're probably still inside."
No sooner had the words left his mouth than a piercing scream suddenly came from ahead, "Chirp chirp chirp..."
Something that looks like a mouse or a snake.
The two exchanged a glance and were about to run inside when three people leisurely walked out from the front.
An old woman, and two monsters with animal heads dressed in robes!
