Chapter 559 Senior Investigator
After being rescued from the wall, Umbridge was immediately taken to the university hospital and flew into a rage when the professors visited her.
"Outrageous! Utterly outrageous!" Her usual fake smile vanished as she clutched a crumpled letter, shouting hysterically, "This is a conspiracy! I am the Senior Undersecretary of the Ministry of Magic! This is a provocation against the Ministry!"
"Calm down, Dolores." Professor McGonagall had read the contents of the letter and, feigning deep thought, pushed up her glasses.
"Hogwarts has hundreds of students, so it's hard to say exactly who wrote this letter to you. After all, there's nothing on it that can be used as evidence. What do you think, Albus?"
She handed the letter to Dumbledore, who was standing next to her.
"Oh, the entire letter contains no personal markings; it's all copied from a book using magic." Dumbledore glanced at it, adjusted his glasses, and said, "If I'm not mistaken, the sender used 'Hogwarts: A History of the School.' I remember that passage was written by Dippet himself."
Umbridge was going crazy. She wanted Dumbledore to hand over the culprit, not to listen to him analyzing the origin of this letter.
However, when faced with this request, Dumbledore, McGonagall, and the other professors all shrugged and expressed regret, ignorance, and inability to discern the reason.
Suddenly, Umbridge seemed to have thought of something.
"Potter!" she shouted. "It must be related to Potter! Arrest him!"
"I'm sorry, Dolores," Dumbledore said calmly. "At Hogwarts, we don't suspect a student based on a guess without any evidence, much less arrest and interrogate him."
"It's definitely him!" Umbridge insisted. "I know everything about him, all for the sake of participating in Quidditch!"
"Dolores," Professor McGonagall said from the side, "In fact, it was I who agreed to Harry participating in the competition; at the time, we all thought you had misremembered your detention time."
The professors all seemed to believe that Harry had nothing to do with it, and even Snape didn't say anything to kick him while he was down.
Umbridge was even angrier, feeling that her authority had been challenged.
Next, even though she hadn't fully recovered, she insisted on leaving the school hospital and returning to the Ministry of Magic, and didn't come back for two days.
For the past two days, the Gryffindor students, believing she had quit because she couldn't take it anymore, were overjoyed, as if it were Christmas all over again. Fred and George were even more smug, boasting to others more than once about their flawless plan.
However, to their surprise, Umbridge returned on Wednesday morning.
She not only returned, but also brought a notice from the Ministry of Magic.
[Education Order No. 24 and Hogwarts Senior Investigator's Announcement]
"The Ministry of Magic sought educational reforms, and Dolores Umbridge was appointed as its first Senior Investigator."
Ron squeezed into the crowd and read the contents aloud.
"Senior Investigator?" Harry asked, frowning. "What does that mean?"
"It means they want to interfere with Hogwarts." Hermione quickly read the following text.
"The Ministry of Magic has created a new position, intending to take away the headmaster's power—look at this, the Hogwarts teaching staff has been lax for a long time, and many parents have noticed that their children's grades have been declining in recent years, causing them great concern. The Ministry of Magic has a responsibility to change this situation and help Hogwarts weed out those incompetent and mediocre members of the teaching staff."
Hermione finished reading and looked at Harry and Cyrus across the table.
"Fudge gave her the power to vet other professors, so she can forcefully interfere with Hogwarts' decisions!" Her breathing quickened, and her voice trembled slightly. "I can't believe it, it's utterly outrageous!"
"It's all because of me." Harry's face darkened. "If it weren't for my desire to play Quidditch, Umbridge wouldn't have had an excuse to interfere at Hogwarts."
"No, it has little to do with you." Celen shook his head and said, "This was Umbridge's purpose in coming to Hogwarts in the first place. Even if you tolerate it this time, what about next time? What if she deliberately causes trouble? Even if you can tolerate it, she can find the same excuse from someone else, so it's all the same. In fact, this is a good thing."
"Good news?" Harry looked at Siron, puzzled.
He couldn't see how this could be a good thing at all.
"At least we know her purpose, don't we?" Siren said. "And we also know a crucial piece of information—"
He lowered his voice, and Harry and Hermione instinctively turned to the side.
"What is it?"
"Umbridge can only rely on the Ministry of Magic." Siren narrowed his eyes. "And she herself is just a fool who can't even open a secret passage mechanism."
"Shillon, what are you trying to do!" Hermione looked up sharply, her voice wary. "Even if Umbridge is detestable, she's still a professor, and she represents the Ministry of Magic. You can't—"
"Hey, what are you thinking?" Siren quickly interrupted her. "You don't think I'm planning to tell Umbridge the location of the Chamber of Secrets, then accidentally close the passage while she's curiously checking it out, and then forget about it until after the 0.WL exam, do you?"
Hermione didn't speak, but stared intently at Siron, her gaze growing increasingly dangerous.
She didn't know what the crime would be for attacking a professor and Deputy Minister for Magic, but she was certain that whoever did such a thing would be expelled, or even imprisoned in Azkaban. She had to stop it from happening.
"Just kidding, just kidding, don't take it so seriously." Seeing Hermione's increasingly serious expression, Siron quickly raised his hand and said, "The Chamber of Secrets in Slytherin requires Parsley to open, which I don't know. Besides, Umbridge has already been fooled once, so they'll definitely be wary of places like the Chamber of Secrets and secret passages, and won't fall for it so easily again."
"That would be best," Hermione said, clearly not entirely convinced by Siren's explanation.
"Actually, what I'm trying to say is that we don't need to be too nervous," Celen continued. "The password to open the secret passage is nearby; even Filch knows it, but Umbridge hasn't found it in two days. This is enough to show that she's mostly using her limited intelligence for flattery and isn't as shrewd as we might think."
Hermione's eyes lit up; she seemed to have found a way to deal with Umbridge.
Harry was also lost in thought, his head down, but his eyes would occasionally dart toward the Slytherin table, flickering slightly.
