Chapter 9 Barbara Gordon
Chapter 9 Barbara Gordon
"Aren't you getting off the bus?"
When the two arrived at the hospital, Jaeger closed the car door, only to find Bruce still sitting comfortably in the driver's seat.
"I'm not really suited to go with you to question Gordon about the case." Bruce tapped his fingers lightly on the steering wheel. "As for the reason..."
"Oh, your disguise." After chatting with Bruce for so long, Jaeger almost forgot that in the eyes of other Gotham residents, this guy was just a brainless billionaire. "I thought you mentioned before that you had a working relationship with Gordon, including the fact that he knew about your disguise."
"No, he doesn't know yet," Bruce said. "So usually, someone else deals with him about the case."
Jaeger paused. "While I was initially inclined to ask if I was the first person to discover your disguise—which would be an honor, of course—I'm more interested in asking now: was the other person Batman?"
“That’s right.” Bruce suddenly gave a meaningful smile. “Generally speaking, these kinds of things are discussed between Batman and Gordon.”
"..." Jaeger stared at him. "Why do I suddenly have a bad feeling?"
"Gordon's ward is on the 4th floor. If anyone tries to kick you out after you enter the hospital, just say my name." Bruce pretended not to hear Jaeger's words, thought for a moment, and then tossed Jaeger a slightly different business card. "Use this."
"I'm going alone?" Jaeger reached out and took the business card, glancing at it subconsciously. He only saw Bruce Wayne's incredibly flashy signature. "Then you...?"
"Me? I happen to have to go back; my butler is looking for me." Bruce snorted. "But don't worry, I'll arrange for someone else to come find you—the reliable kind."
After saying that, Bruce stepped on the gas and sped away without waiting for Jaeger to reply, leaving behind only exhaust fumes.
Jaeger: "..."
Although the rich guy is really generous, his unpredictable nature makes him quite difficult to deal with.
He sighed, put the business card in his pocket, and then walked into the hospital building.
In Gotham, hospitals have always held a special place.
These hospitals are either investments of the Wayne Charitable Foundation, providing assistance to those who can't afford medication at very low prices, or they are backed by a gang, using the hospitals as a neutral ground to rescue members of their own gang that unfortunately fell victim to a gangland shootout.
In other words, if you want to live longer in Gotham, you won't choose to cause trouble at the hospital.
Otherwise, rather than receiving a lawyer's letter from Wayne Enterprises the next day, you're more likely to be hit in the heart by a stray bullet the moment you step out the door.
Right now, the hospital was practically unobstructed for Jaeger, who had a business card signed by Wayne. He easily got James Gordon's room number and took the elevator straight to the fourth floor.
It must be said that, probably because the Batman murder case in recent weeks has led too many criminals to choose to stay at home to save their lives, the number of people in the hospital is much less than Jaeger thought.
The evidence is that the elevator, which normally stops several times when going up in a large hospital, went straight to the fourth floor without any obstruction.
When the elevator doors opened, a red-haired girl carrying a schoolbag, who looked to be in high school, was standing at the door. The moment she saw Jaeger, she blinked her beautiful green eyes.
"Hi," the girl suddenly spoke up, "Are you hungry?"
Jaeger looked around before realizing the girl was talking to him: "Excuse me, are you asking me something?"
"There's no one else here but you." The girl picked up the plastic bag in her hand. Jaeger could see the Subway logo on it. It must have been a sandwich she bought nearby. "This was originally for my dad, but the doctor said it's best for him not to eat this in his current condition. I was wondering what to do with it—if you want it, you can have it, sir."
It would have been better if he hadn't mentioned it, but once the topic of hunger came up, Yeager actually started to feel a bit hungry.
While it's human nature to be wary of things handed to him by strangers, Jaeger's gaze swept over the corner of the student ID peeking out of the other person's pocket, and he immediately understood. So, while taking it, he thanked him, "Thank you so much, I was really hungry... But speaking of which, are you Chief Gordon's daughter, Barbara Gordon?"
The girl paused, her eyes immediately turning wary.
Jaeger realized what was happening and quickly explained, "I'm sorry, I just accidentally saw your student ID... I'm Jaeger, Jaeger Winchester, and I'm here to visit your father."
"I've never heard him mention Winchester before," Barbara said suspiciously. "You don't look like a policeman either."
"I'm not," Jaeger said. "I'm a detective."
