Chapter 140 The Tree of Evolution

Su Enxi winced in pain, slapped away Jiu Demai's mischievous hand, rubbed her cheek, and muttered, "Where am I fat? I'm just right."

"But you, spending all day doing nothing, have become a melancholic beauty. This isn't like you at all."

Mai smiled, then suddenly remembered something, lazily rolled over, and lay on her side on the rope, her curves alluring, looking at her with a hint of confusion:

"By the way, Chips, what have you been busy with lately? Why are you always keeping an eye on our new boss?"

Su Enxi sat back down on the sofa, picked up the bag of potato chips, and spoke in a slightly more serious tone. She snapped her fingers, though her fingers, covered in potato chip crumbs, made her look less imposing. "I'm assessing the risks and taking control of the situation."

Seeing the somewhat disbelieving look in Jiu De Mai's eyes, Su Enxi looked a little unconvinced. She turned the computer screen towards Jiu De Mai, which displayed a satellite map of Chengdu and some complex data streams.

Mai Shude glanced at it and immediately looked exasperated, saying quite naturally, "I don't understand."

This is to be expected. Whether as a genius ninja trained by the Fuma family or as a college dropout from the Department of Music at Tokyo University, Mai Shutoku is helpless when it comes to things that are clearly highly specialized.

Su Enxi smiled; it was rare to see her best friend so helpless. She explained:

"This is the product of combining meteorological and geographical maps of the entire Sichuan, Chongqing, and Hanzhong, as well as the itinerary of Xiaolongnu and your new boss."

Mai Shude was a little dizzy from listening. Looking at the series of complex scenes on the computer screen, she asked, "What's the use of this?"

“It’s incredibly useful,” Su Enxi snapped her fingers again, thoroughly enjoying the moment of looking down on her best friend. “Long legs, what kind of creature do you think the Dragon King is?”

"Wait, wait," Mai Shude was a little overwhelmed by this sudden jump, "How did it suddenly turn from geography class to biology class? Chips, aren't you studying finance?"

Su Enxi said with great confidence, "Playing around with finance is just a hobby of mine. Those hundreds of billions of dollars on Wall Street are just things I picked up casually."

Actually, I'm a...all-rounder.

Mai Shude had a lot of complaints she wanted to complain about, but remembering Su Enxi's comforting words, she softened and sighed, "Yes, yes, you're the best."

Su Enxi replied matter-of-factly, "Of course, without me, the family would fall apart."

After a moment of restraint, she immediately explained, "According to modern biological research, all organisms evolved from the same origin, like countless branches growing on a large tree. This tree can be called the 'Tree of Evolution,' and humans are the last fruit born on this tree of evolution."

Mai interrupted Su Enxi's rambling, full of doubt, "Wait, Chip, are you saying that humans are the last product born on this evolutionary tree? Even though I'm not good at biology, I know that conclusion is wrong. Humans are just one link in the food chain."

Su Enxi nodded. "That's right, Long Legs, you're right," she said leisurely. "But Long Legs, have you ever thought about this?"

"What?" Mai asked instinctively, moving closer to Su Enxi.

Su Enxi said coldly, "The survivor is king."

She scoffed, "Perhaps humans aren't the only perfect one in this ecosystem. Some animals can adapt to environments that humans can't, some animals are amphibious while humans have to rely on air, and some animals have strong survival abilities and long lifespans..."

She spoke at length, finally concluding, "But none of these are the problem. The problem is that if one survives in the end, it will definitely be a human."

The results of all these ecosystems will become a treasure trove in the human gene pool.

Mai Shude was slightly unconvinced by the result. For example, in her understanding, humans had never been able to eliminate insects or do anything about microorganisms. However, she ultimately said nothing and simply nodded.

"Then what does this have to do with the Dragon King?"

“It has a huge impact,” Su Enxi said. “The tree of evolution has three main branches, which we call the three ‘domains’: the bacterial domain, the archaeal domain, and the eukaryotic domain. Any known species belongs to one of these three domains.”

But dragons are an exception; they exist outside these three domains.

Mai Shude remained unmoved by this, and felt little joy in learning new knowledge. "And then what? It's just another path of evolution. What's the point?"

Su Enxi smiled and said, "This is not as simple as having another path of evolution. The most fundamental answer is actually very simple, simpler than you can imagine."

"what?"

“The dragon race itself belongs to a new tree of evolution,” Su Enxi said quietly.

Mai Shude paused for a moment, then laughed and said, "This is truly a remarkable discovery; it will probably overturn a large part of modern biology."

“Long legs are not as simple as you think,” Su Enxi shook her head, looking very unfathomable.

Mai Shude couldn't resist tugging at her hair when she saw her like that, but her curiosity about the unknown made her hold back the thought.

"what is that?"

"From the birth of dinosaurs 200 million years ago to the emergence of humans millions of years ago, and to today's society, all biological research has confirmed this view: life as understood by humans only includes these three domains, and all life exists within these three domains without exception."

She paused, deliberately waiting for Mai Shude to stare into her eyes, before continuing, "But then, millions of years ago, a dragon suddenly appeared, unlike any other life form on Earth, with long legs. What comes to mind?"

“An invasion of alien species,” Mai Shude suddenly had a sudden burst of inspiration. “You mean to say that dragons are aliens, or creatures from another world, like Faerûn.”

"What are you thinking about?" Su Enxi rolled her eyes. "Is it an experiment? Only an experiment could suddenly appear as a product that is completely out of place with its surroundings."

"Whose test subject?"

“The Black King’s, Nidhogg’s,” Su Enxi said cautiously, uttering this supreme name among the dragons.

"Imagine, Mai, millions of years before the birth of humankind, a god suddenly appeared on Earth. He was born in the cold Arctic Ocean and stepped barefoot onto the warm continent for the first time, completely bewildered."

So He felt lonely and afraid, and created a race to be ruled by Him, a race that resembled Him.

Chapter 141 Nothing Exists Outside the Mind

"That god is called Nidhogg."

Mai Shude instinctively shivered because Su Enxi's voice was so deep and close to her ear that she couldn't escape.

Su Enxi didn't finish her sentence, "That's how the Dragon Clan was born. They were created by the Black Emperor and were out of place with their surroundings. The Black Emperor himself was a life form born from Earth."

However, once He was born, He became one with the Earth, therefore the life He created was completely different from the life born on Earth.

"And what about humans?" Mai Shude thought of something and retorted, "Possessing intelligence must also be a characteristic that sets them apart from other life forms!"

“Of course,” Su Enxi laughed again, her laughter bordering on maniacal, “human beings are indeed a product native to Earth, but at the same time, they were also born through gradual enticement.”

She placed a finger over Mai Shude's fiery red lips, silencing the female ninja. "This time, those sons of bitches in the church were right. Humanity was indeed created by a god."

Mai grabbed Su Enxi's fingers, her voice a little hoarse, "Who? It can't be the Black Emperor again, can it?"

"No, Nidhogg created the perfect dragon race, so why would he want to create a new race?"

In His time, the number of races on Earth was hundreds, thousands, even tens of thousands of times greater than it is now. Only under such conditions could a god be born from the impossible.

Su Enxi looked at the bewildered female ninja with a smug expression. "Think about it, Mai, in the history of the Dragon Clan, who else could barely keep up with the Black Emperor's shadow?"

“White King,” Mai Shude blurted out. This name itself meant that she was on par with the Black King in the Dragon Clan.

She could actually be called "boss," but it's hard to say whether the "boss" is actually a dragon.

“That’s right,” Su Enxi nodded. “The inscription on the Bronze Pillar of the Ice Sea says that the White King ‘stained the silver throne with the blood of the common people,’ which is an allusion to the White King’s tyranny.”

Long legs, do you believe it?

Mai Shude said helplessly, "How can I believe you when you say that?"

She paused, then asked, "You're not going to tell me that humans were created by the White King, are you?"

Su Enxi chuckled smugly, then corrected, "It's not creation, it's birth. Humanity was born in the era of the White Emperor, and its birth is closely related to the White Emperor."

She explained, "The White King was created by the Black King, and there is still a certain gap between them. Through summarizing the Earth's ecosystem, He chose humans as His experimental subjects and hoped that they could contend with the Dragon Clan in the future."

Su Enxi suddenly said out of the blue, "Potato Chips, do you know? In the Dragon Blood Life Formation, only human hybrids have their own independent consciousness. Most of the other life forms have become Dead Servants, or even more degenerate life forms than Dead Servants, but they lack intelligence."

Mai Shude's eyes narrowed slightly as she recalled her experiences in the mixed-race society. She realized that dragon blood could indeed bring about a new kind of evolution in life, allowing life to complete the process of millions of years of evolution in just a few minutes. However, it would not benefit intelligence; on the contrary, it would make people "dumber."

"You're not trying to tell me that humans stole a fruit of wisdom, which is why they're different from ordinary people, are you?!"

Mai thought for a long time but couldn't get an answer, so she could only joke, but Su Enxi's serious face showed no sign of teasing.

This immediately panicked the female ninja. "No way, could this really be true?"

"It is indeed true, but the process may be different."

Su Enxi said calmly, then waved her hand, "In short, humans are special, otherwise they wouldn't have had the opportunity to develop science, a path completely different from Word Power and alchemy."

She added, "But at the same time, the so-called purest humans have long since disappeared, and everyone has more or less dragon blood flowing in their veins."

In other words, everyone is of mixed race.

"This reminds me of the X-gene. Could Kassel College be another name for Xavier's Academy of Geniuses?" Mai Shude shrugged, feigning nonchalance.

Su Enxi shook her head. "That's not what I meant. What I wanted to say was..."

She pointed to the clock hanging on the wall, its hands ticking away.

"The foundation of science is materialism, just as time is destined to flow slowly and never return."

She stood up again, roughly pried open the watch face, and forcibly reversed the hands. "The meaning of the dragon race's existence lies in idealism. Time can also be reversed, as long as I think so."

She turned to look at the female ninja who had stood up at some point. "Humans have dragon genes in their bodies, and dragons are always around us, so idealism was very popular until it weakened during the Renaissance."

"However, dragon genes are ultimately only a minority in the human body. Kassel College even intentionally controls the dragon blood content in their students to no more than 50 percent."

Even Kassel College was like this, and most ordinary humans with only a trace of dragon blood in their veins were no exception. Therefore, in the end, humanity did not follow the dragons' path in developing alchemy, but instead went towards science. Even if Newton, the founder of modern science, wanted to go back to that path, it would be an impossible endeavor.

She slowly walked forward and, for the first time, grabbed Mai Shude's face, who didn't flinch. While secretly pleased, her expression remained serious.

“Mai, do you understand? If the foundation of human existence is materialism, the beating heart and thinking brain, then the life of the dragon race is closer to idealism. Their existence is based on the illusory spirit rather than the physical body.”

Su Enxi sighed, "That's why Little Dragon Girl and all the dragons can transform into humans without being detected, because their outward bodies are just a burden, like armor to make them stronger rather than an indispensable heart."

Mai Shude felt her brain being crammed with a bunch of confusing information, and quickly asked, "So, what does this have to do with the geography you mentioned at the beginning?"

"Still don't understand, Mai?" Su Enxi displayed the composure of a top student.

"Since the existence of the dragon race is based on idealism, then everything is made up of the most ethereal spiritual elements, just like atoms or quarks in science."

She nodded one last time at Mai's chest, feeling the beating heart within it—so real, so dear to her.

"There is nothing outside the mind, nothing outside the mind, no reason outside the mind, no righteousness outside the mind, and no goodness outside the mind."

Chapter 142 The Mixed-Blood Family

Mai Shude's gaze lowered slightly. "So, the existence of the dragon race is inherently related to their foundation, Word Power and alchemy, right, potato chips?"

"Bingo," Su Enxi snapped her fingers, but the potato chip crumbs landed on the female ninja's face, making her face turn black.

Su Enxi yawned at the female ninja's cold gaze, brushed it off, and quickly changed the subject, "This is also why humanity can never reach the pinnacle of scientific achievement in alchemy."

She sighed, "The underground palace of Qin Shi Huang's mausoleum was covered with a river map made of mercury, but it couldn't stop Xiang Yu from burning down the palace above the mausoleum with a single fire."

Kassel College houses the largest alchemical matrix in existence, and is known as the safest place in the world, a fortress that even nuclear warheads cannot breach. However, to the dragons, it is merely a slightly more imposing bunker, easily destroyed.
