Chapter 83 : Vlog: Chichén Itzá

Chapter 83 : Vlog: Chichén Itzá

The previously sealed emergency exit opened on the pyramid's end for the first time in ages and the shabby figure of an injured man arose from a platform no one even knew existed.

The gentle breeze that ran on top of Kukulkan's pyramid did nothing to ease Uriel's pain, nor did the last beams of sunlight in the horizon provide any warmth to his body. He was broken, messed up beyond hope, but his will remained the same.

Instead of spending what he knew would be his last moments struggling futilely Uriel was decided to make the most out of his remaining time. Even though it may have looked like it, he wasn't actually escaping from the creatures but moving towards a well planned objective: to fulfill his duty as an archaeologist.

Even if the system branded him as a criminal, even if he had committed the most shameful sin on his field by breaking the jeweled bracelet, he still needed to leave a record of his adventure. His own demise didn't matter to him, so long as someone took over his place and, maybe someday, what he learned today could help solve all the mysteries behind the treacherous ruins of Chichén Itzá.

Uriel spent batteries one after the other in hopes of activating the pyramid. At first it seemed pointless as the convoluted arcs of electricity seemed to spread widely all over the chamber, but after a few seconds it was sucked up into the structure. The backpack filled with tier 3 batteries Uriel had been carried for what seemed an eternity finally fulfilled its purpose.

The activation of the pyramid took effect almost immediately and the protective barrier was up once again. Even though it was invisible, somehow Uriel was able to feel it, and that wasn't everything.

Now that the protective barrier was on, the supernatural interference caused by cryptids Field of disruption ceased and the phone service came back online. Uriel's phone wasn't affected by it from the start, but that wasn't true for the repeater antenna responsible for carrying the phone's signal.

Several notifications started ringing on his head on a mechanical voice, most of those were missed calls and messages from his friends and also from Mister Scofield, but there were too many to count and he was quickly overwhelmed by the sudden intake of information.

Our expedition was fruitful, but now I find myself wounded on top of Kukulkan's pyramid and I don't have much time. I don't even have a light source and my only mean of defending myself is a measly rifle. That and the old ceremonial dagger we found earlier in the Cenote.

This is head archaeologist Uriel Sage and this is probably my last video entry. I don't know if I'll be able to upload this but If you're watching this video, don't come anywhere near this place, call the authorities and share this video with everyone.

The truth must come out.

There's something after me, something ancient that doesn't have a name. This is as much my legacy as it is a warning for whoever comes after me, whatever you do, do not activate the platform of the descending god."

Relief couldn't begin to describe what Uriel felt after recording and he let out a long sigh.

His first mission as an archaeologist had come to an end.

He visited exotic places, met new people, explored incredible cultural remains but more importantly, he managed to leave something behind. The need to leave something for future generations inherent to humans gave Uriel some sort of peace, even if he dropped dead right then and there it wouldn't be for naught.

In the end, though, he still imagined what would happen if he somehow managed to go back alive. People would admire him for his many feats, he would receive an incredible amount of money as payment from the Mapple corporation and even his college would have no choice but to acknowledge his many successes. Heck, they might even acknowledge him as a full fledged archaeologist.

"If only..." Uriel muttered.
