Dear parents and guardians: Please join Pocatello/Chubbuck School District 25 administrators and counselors for an important conversation: Preventative Sexual Harassment Training for Parents

Why this? Why now? Recently, learners in middle school and high school have been provided information and lessons regarding sexual harassment and inappropriate sexual behavior. It’s become clear to us that our learners need specific steps to understand what sexual harassment is and behaviors may be considered sexual. The purpose of these lessons is to build up learners’ knowledge of boundaries. Often, learners are unaware of inappropriate behavior and the consequences that accompany it. Students’ maturity and comprehension levels will increase with age; thus, varying aspects of consent are taught at different ages.

The lessons revolve around the idea of informed consent, which is defined as:

Consent occurs when one person voluntarily agrees to the proposal or desires of another. It is a term of common speech, but may have more specific definitions in such fields as the law, medicine, research, and sexual relationships.

As educators and parents, we have the ability to empower young people by teaching them that they have control over their own bodies. Students learn three important things about personal boundaries: they are self-created, they need to be respected and they can change. Learning to give and receive consent, or even just being aware about the concept of consent, can help children and young adults better understand their bodily rights while also giving them the courage to speak up if those rights are ever violated.

We have provided the slide presentations your learner(s) has/have viewed, as well as links to the videos shown in classes. We encourage you to review them so that you can have a conversation with your children about this very important topic. For more information, please plan to attend the training provided specifically to parents.

Thank you.
